How do kids get hooked on to VIOLENT video games?

How do kids get hooked on to VIOLENT video games?
I heard things like stimulus addiction and violent video games creates tension, could you guys expend on that.

Depends. It's probably not the blood and gore that it hooking them up, but I think it may be the things they watch. The cool action is what makes THEM want to do it. They want to fight. Many people, not only kids get hooked up.

Video Game Addiction and Violence Story

This is my report on the effects of video games on kids and teens.

Need help breaking a video game addiction--are there any healthy games I can play?

I need help breaking a video game addiction. I went cold turkey for 2 weeks no games so far. But, I am tempted to play counter-strike: source, mount and blade and call of duty 4 again...

Are there any healthy games I can play that will satisfy my craving for action, but are less violent? For example, I am a big fan of horses and ancient times. Is there like some game I can ride on a horse and like shoot targets. I want to put positive images in my mind. No blood, gore, killing etc...

I am looking for something I can play like 30-minutes to an hour that would expand my knowledge, sharpen my reflexes, and put healthy scenery in my mind. I got screwed up playing those games (well I was an addict, kind of) and I don't want to fall into it again.

I have a pc, playstation 2 (I have a dance game, but I don't like) but I am looking for a game I can play on the PC. What about that game where you grow a garden... Or can anyone else leave a suggestion? Maybe I should do the real thing. Problem is there aren't any places where u can ride horses full speed down here.

o.O you choose to get addicted

Do you think that children obsessed with violent video games can turn out of touch with reality?

And if this is a known fact, who creates these games & why ???

Such games are a menace...i've seen normally happy, well behaved, gentle little children turn into snarling little terrors when asked to stop playing.

i think, plain & simple, these games are addictive.

ELYRIA, Ohio: A Ohio teen who shot and killed his mother and wounded his minister father was sentenced Tuesday to 23 years in prison for crimes rooted in his obsession with video games with violent themes.

Daniel Petric, 17, who could have gotten life without parole, shook his head slightly, sniffled and held back tears but sat down without saying a word when given the chance by Judge James Burge. Petric's eyes were red from crying when his father, Mark Petric, asked the judge to be lenient and said his son regrets killing his mother and reminds his father often that he is glad his father survived.

As for his mother, Daniel Petric's frequent comment is "Dad, I miss mom. I miss mom," the father said.

"He still does not understand why he did something so terrible," Mark Petric told the judge. The prosecution disputed the contention that Petric had shown remorse for the crimes and asked for the maximum sentence.

Petric was convicted of shooting his parents in October 2007 after they took the game "Halo 3" away from him. The judge had said the teen was so obsessed over a video game that he may have believed that, like the characters in the game, death wasn't real.

The defense claimed his age and addiction to the game made him less responsible.

In the video game "Halo 3," players shoot alien monsters that have taken over the Earth.

YAWN.

This is a known fact??? Prove it??? Provide evidence of a study with 100% conclusive proof and not some LA LA study conducted by anti-gun campaign lobby. Oh wait you can't can you???

Who creates these games and why??? Programmers from multimillion dollar software companies create these games. Why?? Because there is a huge market, demand, and they get paid for doing it.

They are a menace are they?? If parents allow their child to become totally obsessed by computer games then how is it a fault of software industry? The normally happy, well behaved, gentle little children turn into snarling little terrors, turn out that way because of $hit parenting skills. Nothing to do with software industry yet again.
What is a KNOWN fact is that a lot of parents are quite happy to leave their child playing those games for 12-14 hours at the time as long as they get some quiet time for themselves. This is why the children obesity levels are on the rise, that is why children turn into monsters. All of it can be prevented by striking a balance and disallowing the kids to sit there for long periods of time.

So?? Some 17 year old geek blows away his parents. So what???
How did he get hold of the gun?? Why wasn't family firearm locked securily?? Why did his parents allowed him to sit there for hours bashing at his senseless console?? Did he even sit down to eat his dinner at the family table??? The causes are deeper than just laying blame at the door of software companies. And just because of such sporadic tragic events, do we automatically come to conclusion about banning all the software?? Because once we ban one category, it won't stop there. But even if we ban all these games, the focus will switch onto something else and the problems will just continue.

Love me or hate me I don't care. But unless you are blind or narrowminded, you certainly would not come to a conclusion that software is somehow responsible.

Video game violence a concern?

I am doing an opinion essay on video game violence, and if the nature and level of violence in video games is becoming an increasing concern. I need three arguments, but I can't seem think of a last one. Here is what I have so far:

The nature and level of violence in video games is becoming an increasing cause for concern is primarily due to various research and studies done providing a potential link between violent video games and adverse behaviour among players, however, secondary concerns include the possible negative effects related to a child’s social development and the game play itself ensuing addiction and obsession among users.

I know there are three there, but I am uncertain about using the addiction one as it doesn't have a whole lot to do with VIOLENCE in video games. Anyone have any other ideas???? Much appreciated!!

You could also talk about how many games that are excessively violent (eg Manhunt) are meant for an older and more mature audience that is able to separate video games from reality (hence the M rating...such games are not meant for parents to buy for their kids). Also how those who are affected in such a way that they become more violent are predisposed to do so (and why they might be caused to carry out such violent actions...what triggers it).

Why are parents more concerned about violent video games more than anything else?

It's stupid. ABSOULUTELY stupid for any parent to think that violent video games have more of a negative impact on a child's brain than pornography and alcohol. Alcohol can lead you straight to jail, ruin your life, or worse if you're careless. Pornography can lead you into an addiction which can damage the way you perceive women, ruin your sex life as an adult, ruin the state of wellness for the brain, and ruin your life literally in general. Trust me, I've been down the roads of both of these avenues. However, as a person who grew up on extremely violent games like the original Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil, I have a real issue with parents who are unfamiliar with the childhood experience of gaming thinking that music with violent themes or violent games can make a child "go crazy". The simple fact of the matter is that parents pretty much don't like forms of entertainment they are not used to. You will sit there and watch a film featuring the hottest actor blowing people up and shooting bullets through their bodies and then turn around and say you think video games are negative. Why? Because YOU don't do it? Or because it puts the child in the control perspective? Please. That's actually a good way for every child to express their inner instinct which is violent and exists in EVERY human. I personally believe that allowing a child to play games like Grand Theft Auto IV will allow them to relieve any urge for such activities depicted in the game and thus, rid them of the potential urge to ACTUALLY do it in real life. It's a way of expression. It's like writing a song or poem about someone you want to beat up instead of really doing it. It's a relief, but it's essentially entertainment. That's all it is. Quit blaming Eminem and Rockstar Games (creator of GTA IV) for your child's oppression, mental issues, or mere inability to control their thinking. It's YOUR CHILD! Not the game! How do you explain the decline in childhood violence over the years compared to what it used to be way back before video games were even conceived? I rest my case. The same was said about wrestling, the WWF I grew up to caught a lot of crap from parents concerned about what they were doing and kids watching it. Me and my brother were the biggest WWF fans in our youth but I don't ever recall one of us jumping on top of the couch to perform a leaping elbow-drop on the other while he was laying on the carpet watching television. It's all entertainment, and if you or your child can't differentiate that then perhaps YOU yourself or your child should go see a phsychiatrist. Human males have a violent nature. It's science you cannot stop and must deal with. You can let your child choose to express this nature either through video games or in actual life with real consequence. It's your choice and I have spoken.

I would go so far as to say pornography and alcohol are not to blame for weakness, rather the people who abuse them are. Although I use the word "blame" lightly, human beings are not the free-minded, conscious animals we'd like to think we are - we are pretty much controlled by lesser instincts.

Why people always seek a scapegoat..I don't know. There appears to be some sort of illusion that at some point in human history, we were enlightened, nice and innocent creatures.

We weren't. Ever. Nor will we ever be. There are unpleasant things in the world, time to accept it.

A Plugged in Culture

As an educator this video boils my blood! I do not dispute the claims and statistics that are starkly presented here. I acknowledge the power that technology has to teach and I agree that our educational system is sorely in need of reform. I just think the conclusions that are drawn are wildly off base. What this video says to me is "Let's spend money to put computers in our classrooms, but continue to pay teachers a pittance to compete with these digital influences." My first experience with computers in the classroom was in my very first preschool class. A computer was donated to the LEAP school, and it made the rounds from room to room with several educational games for the students to play. In our class we made a turn-list and set a 5 minute time limit for each turn. Let me share two observations:  1) I could tell those students who were accustomed to playing on the computer. They knew exactly what to do, where to insert the DVD's how to scroll through menus and directions and...

Average age of adult bvideo game/b player is 35: US study

According to a team from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), players were also less healthy, fatter, and more depressed than those who stayed away from the device.

A previous UK survey, conducted by the Leisure Software Publishers Association seven years ago, had placed the average age of the player’s age between 25 and 34, reports the BBC.

But it also said that the age bar was gradually increasing, a finding reinforced by the CDC study.

CDC experts found that female gamers reported greater depression and lower health status than female non-players, while male video-game players reported a higher BMI and a greater reliance online than non-gamers.

Dr James B Weaver said: “Health risk factors, specifically a higher BMI and a larger number of poor mental-health days, differentiated adult video game players from non-gamers.

“Video game players also reported lower extraversion, consistent with research on adolescents that linked video-game playing to a sedentary lifestyle and overweight status.” (ANI)
