Sometimes when i play xbox for 4+ hours i literally feel dizzy and tired and depressed. I think its because i am going through withdrawal. This is no joke. Can video games be a drug?
Video games aren't a drug, but they can have a similar effect on the brain. It is possible to become addicted to a video game. Your symptoms seem in the realm of possibility, except for the dizziness.
Best Wishes.

Hello,
My PS3 broke 2 weeks ago and I have finally over come my video game addiction. The first week was horrible. I had all these withdrawal symptoms, but I kept myself from playing anything even on the computer. This is great and all that I am over it, but now I realize I have an incredible amount of free time. I go away to University in August, but what to do until then? I am just sitting around with nothing to do usually, but music. Any suggestions are great. Thanks.
Well what do you like? Depending on what you like and what you enjoy can lead to new hobbies and stuff. If you like music then what about trying to write a song..or try to play a new instrument? Listening to music can be good too, exploring new artists and new types of music can be fun to do as well. Also you can try hanging out with your friends and trying to keep your day as busy as possible..so that you never run out of anything to do?
cant just take away the vid game, there are withdrawal conflicts
try introducing something new such as a sport like football or basketball...or start with limitations like 2 hours a day and then a little while later 1 hour a day... then 1/2 hour a day then stop him/her. when the time gets smaller and smaller they may complain but they might eventuallly stop themselves and say there is no point playing for such a little time...hope this helps
being an ex-hardcore gamer myself in World of Warcraft, I had experienced MMORPG addiction to the point where I had lost friends, my girlfriend, and turned family against me. (not to mention now still being made fun of by friends and family because of my past excessive MMORPG playing)
I had played World of Warcraft, and being a MMORPG makes the game require more time invested into it because these are real people you play with and are required to play with to make you attain a better avatar.
I had also become emotionally attatched with the people, when I quit I felt I had lost a lot of important friends, these 'friends' also made quitting so much harder since I was a tank (important role in World of Warcraft) in a far endgame raiding guild (a clan, or team which teams up to beat dungeons and acquire better loot/gear) and I always said to myself when trying to quit that I would be letting so many people down and they would never forgive me.
It took me around 8 months to quit the game, I say 8 because it was 8 months before I quit when I realised this is really effecting my life and needs to stop, here are some withdrawal symptons and long term effects it had on me.
Withdrawal symptons:
- I had a strong temper for a few weeks, and most of the things around me I would strongly be irritated by, including the people around me.
- I removed myself from socializing, I just didn't feel like I needed to and had no motivation to talk with anyone.
- I did twicth a lot, i'm sure people would say that's for physically addicting drugs only most of the time, but i'm telling you twicthing was a present withdrawal sympton I experienced.
- I sweat a lot, even in a cold enviroment I would sweat for no reason, sometimes after something would tick me off.
- I felted anxious and depressed for quite some time
- I couldn't sleep
long term effects
- I had lost friends and other things I stated above
- My socializing skills were extremely poor, I could hardly keep a conversation going for a few months.
- my grades had declined dramatically in school
Not to mention it could be a lot worse for those older with a job and family to support, Id like to hear your input on the topic.
sorry for the long post but I really appreciate your time put into answering this.
I also had poor eating habits as a result
Wow dude, that sucks. Well in your case, I believe they are a serious problem. In general, is it a serious problem? No, not serious...a problem, yea. I think most people have the control to moderate the time they spend on these games. I do agree that they are highly addictive but I haven't found myself losing friends and such. There is nothing wrong with being a hardcore gamer just as long as you are able to be away from the game without getting withdrawal and separating the game world from the real world.
there are withdrawal conflicts so cant directly take it away. but it affects them more indirectly as in health so whats the solution
Treat yourself to play video games after you have done a certain thing. For example, say after I am done with my homework (or chores, or whatever) I will play video games.
Make playing video games a treat (something you do to reward your self) no a chore (something that you have to and do every single day).
Hope that helps
Book Review on bVideo Game Addiction/b « Weissbluth Method
Recently, I have been very interested by these stories originating in China about “Internet Addiction.” From the news items, it appears to be a serious problem there and I was curious to learn more about it. I went online and typed in “internet addiction” and was directed to a book called, “Video Games and Your Kids: How Parents Stay in Control” (Cash and McDaniel). Addiction medicine is a topic that is relatively not emphasized in pediatric training so I decided to pick up the book.
The book’s focus was gaming addiction which was the closest I could find to internet addiction in my search. I assumed that enough gaming took place on computers to be relevant for the topic and also that the mechanism of gaming and internet addiction were similar. The organization of the book starts by defining gaming addiction and its processes. It proceeds to explain addiction as it relates to varying age groups. The language of the book reflects the author’s goals of treating addiction: They use words like “withdrawal” and “intervention”. Instead of describing “adaptability,” they use the phrase “frustration tolerance” (which I liked a lot). The use of addiction terminology helped me appreciate this as a medical phenomenon despite how socially accepted internet and video games are. However, I was more skeptical of the discussions on “love addiction” as it relates to meeting others while playing World of Warcraft
...bVideo Game Addiction/b - bVideo Game Addiction/b Parents Group
Few services are available for people with video game addiction and their loved ones, but a group for the parents and guardians of children with video game addiction is now available in Seattle, WA.
The group follows the psycho-educational model, in which teaching is the main group activity. The group setting also provides the opportunity to meet with other parents who are struggling with their childrens compulsive computer use. People typically find this supportive, and feel less isolated knowing they are not the only one going through this problem.
The content of the group sessions covers:
The nature of addiction The limits that people with addictions need How to set boundaries for your video game addicted child Preparation for your child going through withdrawal from video game addiction You childs reconnection with realityThe group is facilitated by Dr. Hilarie Cash, a co-founder of Internet/Computer Addiction Services, and Anna DiNoto, currently studying for her doctorate in clinical psychology with a focus in video game/Internet addiction at Argosy University in Seattle, Washington.
