I am doing research about a case where I player in a video game used the game as an escape to reality and in turn, the player ended up commiting suicide because he did not take proper steps to ensure mental stability.

Can game addiction lead to suicide? Give your opinions on the subject for a research paper I am doing.

I think that in fact in most cases the mental problem came first, and the addiction was developed as an adaptative means to deal with the stress caused by the mental instability.
I think that you should treat the initial problem first, which would be the mental issues, before you can accuse the addiction (in this case to video games) for causing the end result.

For a research paper, I am looking into the controversial effects of video games have on people. More specifically, violence and video game addiction.

I am having trouble looking for some reliable sources. Can anyone please tell me if there are any creditable websites, books, study statistics, or newspaper articles that I can look at?

I would greatly appriciate it since I am quite curious about this topic.

Also check for educational journals at the library. This study has been done repeatedly. Ask your librarian unless you know how to get to the e-journals.

De-bunk the idea. People can choose to be addicted to anything, saying video games are addictive is like saying walking or drawing is addictive. Talk about the specific groups that say video gaming is addictive. What ages are the members of this group? Political affiliation? Are they parents? If it's a study, who sponsered it? Look for interviews with young people who play video games, articles about addiction to games in magazines, ect. Also...DO YOU play video games? Do you think you could quit easily? I know that after having played world of warcraft for over a year, my recent lack of a computer to play it on has made me rather upset, but then again, I wouldn't like it if any regular part of my life was taken away. Talk to your friends, too. Do a survey in school, perhaps of the kids in the computer lab, graphic design department, or other creative or computer based club. Go to a major gaming message board, and ask their what happened to people who tried to quit playing, especially MMOs (massively multiplayer online) games. I'm not sure how indepth the paper has to be, but I would think even 3 of those ideas, well implemented, would do the trick for most assignments. And...of course....
