Child neglect due to...online video game addiction???

Couldn't believe this story...apparently two 21 and 23 year old parents of two children of age 11 and 22 months severely neglected their children due to an internet addiction of the online RPG Dungeons and Dragons. The children were near death before they were taken by social workers.

I thought maybe the chick would have a myspace since they're so internet savvy, and I was right.

Pretty sad. Prettay-prettay-prettay sad. White trash are embarrassments to caucasians everywhere. And where was the Reno Sheriff's Department? Officer Jones and Garcia should have been all over that.

It really is sad! Those poor babies! But I just don't understand how a couple can become THAT ingrossed in the internet and gaming?! It doesn't make any sense to me. I mean, I love the internet as much as the next addict.. but really... take care of your kids first!!!!

Police say that Dinh The Dan, a 13 year old boy, "strangled Mai Thi Mau, 81, with a piece of rope and took 100,000 dong ($6.20) from her". While in custody, he "confessed that he needed money to play online games and decided to kill and rob the woman".

Gregg J. Kleinmark, 24, plead "guilty to two counts of involuntary manslaughter". He "left fraternal twins Drew and Bryn Kleinmark unattended in a bathtub for 30 minutes, in order to go three rooms away and play on his Game Boy Advance console" while "in the mean time, the two ten-months old kids drowned".
that's really sad

I read on this website (destructoid.com a gaming website) about this man who was dating this women who had a little baby and he was playing his game and the baby started crying so he ended up killing the baby

I can't remember exactly how he killed the baby, but he killed it because the baby interrupted his game...

I play games a lot, but what people do is just RIDICULOUS

Do you think that children obsessed with violent video games can turn out of touch with reality?

And if this is a known fact, who creates these games & why ???

Such games are a menace...i've seen normally happy, well behaved, gentle little children turn into snarling little terrors when asked to stop playing.

i think, plain & simple, these games are addictive.

ELYRIA, Ohio: A Ohio teen who shot and killed his mother and wounded his minister father was sentenced Tuesday to 23 years in prison for crimes rooted in his obsession with video games with violent themes.

Daniel Petric, 17, who could have gotten life without parole, shook his head slightly, sniffled and held back tears but sat down without saying a word when given the chance by Judge James Burge. Petric's eyes were red from crying when his father, Mark Petric, asked the judge to be lenient and said his son regrets killing his mother and reminds his father often that he is glad his father survived.

As for his mother, Daniel Petric's frequent comment is "Dad, I miss mom. I miss mom," the father said.

"He still does not understand why he did something so terrible," Mark Petric told the judge. The prosecution disputed the contention that Petric had shown remorse for the crimes and asked for the maximum sentence.

Petric was convicted of shooting his parents in October 2007 after they took the game "Halo 3" away from him. The judge had said the teen was so obsessed over a video game that he may have believed that, like the characters in the game, death wasn't real.

The defense claimed his age and addiction to the game made him less responsible.

In the video game "Halo 3," players shoot alien monsters that have taken over the Earth.

YAWN.

This is a known fact??? Prove it??? Provide evidence of a study with 100% conclusive proof and not some LA LA study conducted by anti-gun campaign lobby. Oh wait you can't can you???

Who creates these games and why??? Programmers from multimillion dollar software companies create these games. Why?? Because there is a huge market, demand, and they get paid for doing it.

They are a menace are they?? If parents allow their child to become totally obsessed by computer games then how is it a fault of software industry? The normally happy, well behaved, gentle little children turn into snarling little terrors, turn out that way because of $hit parenting skills. Nothing to do with software industry yet again.
What is a KNOWN fact is that a lot of parents are quite happy to leave their child playing those games for 12-14 hours at the time as long as they get some quiet time for themselves. This is why the children obesity levels are on the rise, that is why children turn into monsters. All of it can be prevented by striking a balance and disallowing the kids to sit there for long periods of time.

So?? Some 17 year old geek blows away his parents. So what???
How did he get hold of the gun?? Why wasn't family firearm locked securily?? Why did his parents allowed him to sit there for hours bashing at his senseless console?? Did he even sit down to eat his dinner at the family table??? The causes are deeper than just laying blame at the door of software companies. And just because of such sporadic tragic events, do we automatically come to conclusion about banning all the software?? Because once we ban one category, it won't stop there. But even if we ban all these games, the focus will switch onto something else and the problems will just continue.

Love me or hate me I don't care. But unless you are blind or narrowminded, you certainly would not come to a conclusion that software is somehow responsible.

honest opinion needed...?

ok... im sure alot of u are like me and have an addiction to video games... i cant help but go out and buy the newest game for what ever system.... (as long as its good of course) but im stuck on rather or not 2 get the new mortal combat vs. superman an all them... im not the biggest mk fan...but i did like armegdon... but i dont want this game if its been toned down b/c of the comic book guys... to me mk means alot of blood an brutal deaths... so... is this a game i should look into... or jus wait till jan when the new games start rollin out again...
an yes i have all the big titles..or at least had them (gears of war 2, left for dead.. little big planet, metal gear ... 2k9, madden u no...the basics... so... whats ur opinion

I would suggest skipping on that game. It is not selling very well, and frankly there is not much depth to it. If you are really looking for something new to mess with, check out the new Prince of Persia. It is getting astounding reviews, and just might be the last AAA game of the year.

Does depression lead to addiction?

I've been depressed all my life, but it's not really something that happened to me (I've led a rather privlidged life-no divorces or family deaths or things like that) but it seems like I just shift from one addiction to another. Like when I was young i was addicted to video games and then that turned into writing and then religion and then politics and then to philosophy and then music and then poetry and then lying to people. And it seems that I can never be lukewarm on something I either love it hate it or show no interest at all. So is my depression causing this or does my addictions just lead to depression?

You do not seem to be experiencing what I would call depressive episodes. You sound as if you are intelligent and are exhibiting some signs of being obsessive. You seem to need something in your life that you can be study and be challenged by. If you feel content when you have an outlet for your creative and intellectual interests, I would suggest that you may be mistaking depression for boredom.

  • DJ Hero#39;s DJ AM Found Dead in New York [Dj Hero] : ZergWatch bVideo/b b.../b

DJ AM , a playable character in Activision’s forthcoming DJ Hero , was found dead in his Manhattan apartment Friday. Adam Goldstein , as he was known in real life, was a performer with a well-known history of drug addiction, and recovery from it. He was 36. Tim Riley, the Activision vice president of music affairs, released a brief statement on word of Goldstein’s death: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of DJ AM. We hope that his work on the game will be a fitting tribute to his creative spirit and musical talent.” So it doesn’t sound like the tragic development changes anything about DJ AM’s appearance in the game, due for release Oct. 27. The Associated Press reported that police found prescription medications and a crack pipe in Goldstein’s apartment in New York. Paramedics discovered him shirtless and wearing sweatpants in his bed at 5:20 p.m. on Friday. A friend had called police, alarmed that he was unable to get into the home. There was no evidence of foul play. Goldstein was quite open about his addiction to crack, ecstasy and other drugs, which led to a failed suicide attempt. MTV planned to debut his reality show in October, in which he would stage interventions for drug abusers. In 2008, Goldstein was badly hurt in the airplane crash that killed four people and seriously injured Travis Barker, the Blink-182 drummer.
