What are good sources on video game addiction and violence?

For a research paper, I am looking into the controversial effects of video games have on people. More specifically, violence and video game addiction.

I am having trouble looking for some reliable sources. Can anyone please tell me if there are any creditable websites, books, study statistics, or newspaper articles that I can look at?

I would greatly appriciate it since I am quite curious about this topic.

Also check for educational journals at the library. This study has been done repeatedly. Ask your librarian unless you know how to get to the e-journals.

What is it with guys and their video game & anime addiction?

I have this guy friend I really like and I think he's a very cool person. And the thing is, I don't mind him liking anime and videogames what so ever cuz I think u can like whatever u want (just shows who u are), but I hate how his likingness is more than what it is; he's so addicted to anime and videogames, and alot of the times when we IM he never says much to me, and whenever I'm quiet, he's like "why are you quiet?" And now he's found this girl that i think he might be falling for who loves what he loves and...well is also into porn too. Anyways, I just wanna understand whats with guys being so absorbed into anime and video games so much that they don't engage into reality that much? Doesn't that addiction kinda, well make you... I don't know, kinda impair your life or the way you think, does it somehow make u narror minded or something? What are the bad effects anime and video game addiction can do? I mean, I care about him, and think he's cool, but wud be alot better and likeable if he focused more on other stuff and even was more engaged in our MSN convo. It hurts how...how he ignores me and youtubes too many amv's or god knows what behind the screen, although I will say I do sorta like some of his taste in music. But still, it kinda hurts me cuz he's kinda like my only friend, I feel kinda weak, distracted, lonely and etc. But just for the sake of understanding what is it with the god damn addiction addiction?

its not just guys, im a girl and i am obsessed with video games and anime too

i can't tell you the addiction but i can tell you that if you want this guy to like you why not try and watch them

they really aren't bad...my boyfriend thought anime was lame until I got him to watch it with me now he loves it too (not all of them but most of them)

seriously, its not as lame as everyone thinks
i'd recommened watching Inuyasha, Death Note or Bleach to start out with they are really good animes

and video games, play something like Final Fantasy they have great story lines

if he sees you are interested in it then you will have more to talk about
and if you just can't get into bc video games and anime aren't for everyone than maybe you should find someone else who has the same interests as you do

Do you think MMORPG and video game addiction are a serious problem in today's world?

being an ex-hardcore gamer myself in World of Warcraft, I had experienced MMORPG addiction to the point where I had lost friends, my girlfriend, and turned family against me. (not to mention now still being made fun of by friends and family because of my past excessive MMORPG playing)

I had played World of Warcraft, and being a MMORPG makes the game require more time invested into it because these are real people you play with and are required to play with to make you attain a better avatar.

I had also become emotionally attatched with the people, when I quit I felt I had lost a lot of important friends, these 'friends' also made quitting so much harder since I was a tank (important role in World of Warcraft) in a far endgame raiding guild (a clan, or team which teams up to beat dungeons and acquire better loot/gear) and I always said to myself when trying to quit that I would be letting so many people down and they would never forgive me.

It took me around 8 months to quit the game, I say 8 because it was 8 months before I quit when I realised this is really effecting my life and needs to stop, here are some withdrawal symptons and long term effects it had on me.

Withdrawal symptons:

- I had a strong temper for a few weeks, and most of the things around me I would strongly be irritated by, including the people around me.
- I removed myself from socializing, I just didn't feel like I needed to and had no motivation to talk with anyone.
- I did twicth a lot, i'm sure people would say that's for physically addicting drugs only most of the time, but i'm telling you twicthing was a present withdrawal sympton I experienced.
- I sweat a lot, even in a cold enviroment I would sweat for no reason, sometimes after something would tick me off.
- I felted anxious and depressed for quite some time
- I couldn't sleep

long term effects

- I had lost friends and other things I stated above
- My socializing skills were extremely poor, I could hardly keep a conversation going for a few months.
- my grades had declined dramatically in school

Not to mention it could be a lot worse for those older with a job and family to support, Id like to hear your input on the topic.
sorry for the long post but I really appreciate your time put into answering this.
I also had poor eating habits as a result

Wow dude, that sucks. Well in your case, I believe they are a serious problem. In general, is it a serious problem? No, not serious...a problem, yea. I think most people have the control to moderate the time they spend on these games. I do agree that they are highly addictive but I haven't found myself losing friends and such. There is nothing wrong with being a hardcore gamer just as long as you are able to be away from the game without getting withdrawal and separating the game world from the real world.

Damnit, video game addiction and homework!!!?

I'm one of the unlucky ones who get overly stimulated by video games (especially RPG-types) and now that I have Mass Effect (Xbox 360) I have been playing for 3 days (with sleep) straight and I have completely blocked out my English homework. It has sucked my mind into it, I am enslaved.

I tried to even take a small step of 20 minutes of pure focusing, but I started daydreaming and stopped after 5 minutes... IT'S PSYCHOLOGICALLY TOUGH!!!

Anyone else go through the same cycles? Any advice? This is miserable...

have your parents hide it until your done though it may make you go crazy.

I'm getting Mass Effect I hope its fun

What is the effect of playing too much PC video games?

Is there such thing as PC video game addiction?

Doctors groups have been lobbying for 'Video Game Addiction' to be classified as a psychiatric disorder. I remember following up on this debate some months ago. Let me see if I can find a link to direct you to.

Here we go.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/06/21/health/main2965003.shtml

There is no classification for 'Video game Addiction' so far, but doctors are pushing for it. Why? Well, one could think two ways on it.

One thought is doctors want it to be studied and diagnosed until an appropriate solution or 'cure' could be found.

Another thought is once it has a classification, doctors can now charge medical insurances for it. (Right now, it's simply not covered and has to be paid out of pocket)

I myself see the addiction as a reality with negative social side effects, many of which are listed on the website. But that is just my opinion.
