Many kids and even teens are addicted to video games. This is a serious problem and can affect the child's physical, emotional and social health. He/ she does not play sports (usually), may not have friends and does bad in school. If anyone has any advice or comments please leave them. I may do a project on this topic.
Parents can limit their time playing for one thing. Kids need to be encouraged to have many interests.

I am a 14 year old guy. I'm not obsessed but it is stopping me from doing other things. How do I stop this addiction and turn it into a hobby like it's supposed to be?
You can make deals with yourself.
So, say you need to do something, if it's a small thing then think: "If I complete this, then I can play for x amount of time."
If it's something larger then think: "If I accomplish this much, then I can play for x amount of time."
Make sure that you aren't 'cheating' and rewarding yourself with 2 hours of play for something as simple as taking out the trash.
If you broke the task into segments and are taking a break, write down the things you still have left to accomplish so you don't forget when you play your game.
When you are playing, you need to keep an eye on the time so you don't end up playing for too long. If it's a game that you can only save every now and then, save when you are running low on time and if you feel like it add the remaining time on to your next gaming session (Don't start a boss fight with 2 minutes left).
Having self control and following through with your deals will help out a lot.
It is a little sad but I am easily addicted to games. I am now addicted to video games and will spend all of my free time playing if I can. I have problems with managing my time when I play and do other things. Any help from past gamers, or people that just know about games is welcome.
This is going to sound silly, but I'm dead serious on this.
Play your games as much as possible.
I hate to say it, but eventually, you will burn out. That's basically what I did. Played so much, that I couldn't stand them. As it is now, I can play for a while, but after an hour or so, I have to quit. It's still fun, I just can't stand to do it for long periods of time anymore.
May help you, might not. Just a suggestion.

Special calendar of benefits: Once you’ve quit, you can still play the game and measure the daily benefits you get from your new life without cigarettes.
Takes Allen Carr's method takes the method to a new level by simultaneously entertaining and challenging the player – a truly interactive approach and more efficient learning process that enables the player to quit smoking more easily.
Reward system: Using the Path to Freedom meter, track your progress as you move from dependence to freedom.
I need to stop playing video games and playing on the computer so much. How can I stop myself?
Addiction to anything is very hard to overcome, especially if it's not something that's directly affecting your health. I'm sure though that it is probably affecting your family life, social life, and I have heard of people getting arthritis and carpal tunnel from playing games too much.
I know of somebody who spent his days and night playing a game on his computer and had to eventually learn how to play with his left hand because he damaged his right one so badly. I know it is hard to let go of anything that brings you comfort and happiness even if it is affecting your life in negative ways. Try going to this blog, it is very helpful and you can contact the writer and get support.
Good luck!
My boyfriend plays video games all the time. He lacks in responsibilities because he plays World of Warcraft. He forgets about me too. How do I ween him off of it?
Whatever you do, don't unplug!!!! If my girlfriend ever did that to me there would be some serious issues. I am a video game addict I play at least three hours a day if not more so I know where I'm coming from. There are a few things you can do to get him to stop playing video games for certain amounts of time, but if you are trying to get him to quit for good you might have an easier time finding a new boyfriend. Recent studies have found video games to be more addicting than cocaine and I very much believe that! If you just want to spend time with him without the damn game getting in the way though try taking him out somewhere. Go someplace where he can't play video games like camping or something. But don't treat it like a problem (even if it is!) because you may hit some bad nerves. We video game addicts see video games as a part of our lives. I love my girlfriend a lot, but if it was a choice between her or video games.... it would be a really tough decision.

Back in 1991 there was a Microsoft video game called “Gorillas” that featured two angry apes tossing explosive bananas at each other while standing above a city skyline.
Today, the 800-pound gorilla in the room is addiction to video games. As a parent, you already know if gaming is causing problems for your child and your family. And the gorilla that nobody wants to acknowledge is far more menacing than the pair of pixilated primates in that 18-year-old strategy game.
Technological advances in computer gaming have grown by leaps and bounds in the nearly two decades since “Gorillas” arrived on the scene, and so have the number of players addicted to computer gaming.
The video games of today are so much more complex – and captivating – than those of decades past, and they range from massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) to simple games like the Mario Bros. series that have stood the test of time. One of the most popular of these multiplayer megagames is “World of Warcraft,” an extremely addictive game that is sometimes called “World of Warcrack” because it draws gamers to it like a street corner drug dealer. Blizzard, the creator of “WoW” claims there are 8 million Warcraft players worldwide – and 3.5 million of those gamers are in China.
