How can we prevent and/or treat video game addiction?

many people (mostly young men and teens) are addicted to video games. this is a serious issue and affects the addicts' health, jobs, relationships and school work. How can we prevent and treat this serious issue?

This is not an addiction, its a choice. That word has been thrown around extremely to much. It is used as an excuse. There is absolutely no addiction to video games, although it may seem that some ppl are. I for one LOVE playing video games and I will stay up all night and day playing games. It however, does not effect my work, relationship, or social life. If it did I could do something about it, just like ANYONE who you say has an "addiction" can do. Anyone can just stop playing, its not hard and it is very very possible. If they let themselves get so bad that it is affecting their life in a negative manner then they themselves should have the self control to stop letting it interrupt their life, if they do not have the self control then the hell with them thats their own problem. If someone isnt responsible enough to put their life in front of a video game then thats not someone I would waste helping.

Alot of kids, however, do not know better, and this is not the kids fault it is simply the parents fault. I know my dad used to MAKE me go outside all freakin day on any warm day and make me socialize and find things to do. He wouldnt allow me to waste my life on nintendo when I could be out playing baseball/basketball/football anything of that sort. Dont punish the kids b/c their parents dont know what their doing. Parents need to learn how to control their kids anyways (without drugging them b/c over half of the time that is unnecessary). Its not hard, you are the freakin parent they do as YOU say, not what they want.

What companies are investing in medical centers to treat video game addiction?

I know it is considered an actual medically diagnosable disorder by a lot of doctors. So, does anyone know which companies will put the money into a treatment center?

At the current time, video game "addiction" is NOT diagnosable (officially) in the DSM-IV-tr or the current version of the ICD.

Until that time, it is highly unlikely that any funding/grants would be issued to study and/or treat it. Companies invest in studies/treatment when it is potentially profitable. Until it is officially diagnosable (and then unofficially treatable), the vast majority of companies will not invest a dime in it.

How can we prevent and/ or treat video game addiction?

This CAN be a serious problem and may affect health, work and schoolwork. What are some possible solutions?

When I was young, my dad would always tell me that the amount of time I spent on the computer, I'd have to spend double the time doing homework or practicing my maths. For example, I spend 2 hours on the computer, later I would have to spend 4 hours doing work! It often worked because I hated maths.

Seattle Leads the Way With New Services for bVideo Game Addiction/b

Seattle pioneers in video game addiction research and treatment, Dr. Hilarie Cash and Anna DiNoto of Argosy University, have developed a range of new services for people living with and affected by video game or computer addictions.

Therapy groups now exist to treat people with video game addictions in group therapy with others who have the same problem. Adults and teens aged over 16 work together to learn how to re-intergrate into reality, find a healthy balance between computer use and other areas of their lives, and learn new life skills they may be missing out on.

A similar group is offered for younger people aged 10-15 , who are struggling with computer game addiction.

Parents can participate in a seperate group which will help them learn about their childs addiction, no matter what their childs age, and to learn how best to support them in overcoming their video game addiction.

Whose Da Geekiest: bVideo Games/b

Name: Gamers? 15 years ago I heard the phrase Video Game Jock, not sure if that is still used.

Lingo: MMORPG, Retro-gaming. Next gen systems. Platform. 16 bit etc. Coin op. Cheat Code

Size and Mainstreamness: This probably has the highest level of mainstreamness and fandom base. Virtually every kid plays video games, as do many adults. New releases of comic books, RPGs, CCG,s and anime never make the national news on a consistent basis, and video game sales have outgunned Hollywood for years now.

Another factor that is making it more mainstream is the rise of professional gaming. Big cash prizes are awarded for the top players of various shooting, strategy, and golf games. (Yes they have a professional golf video game league. I can’t even stand real golf) In fact, Korean television has at least 3 channels of nothing but people playing video games. Which video games do you ask? Starcraft. Sometimes it is Counter Strike, but mostly Starcraft. I could see watching a boxing/fighting/sports game, but Koreans spend their day watching real time strategy. Professional video game players are some of Koreas biggest celebrities.
