How do you get someone to quit their addiction to video games?

My bf and I have been dating for over a year now. He was a gamer when I first started dating him...and now its only seemed to get worse. I have tried respecting his hobby and his own time, and we have tried to come up with compromises (i.e. he can only play on certaibn days), but everytime we come up with something he finds a way to sneek more and more time in. I can't stand it anymore. How can I get him to want to spend more time with me and less with his WoW buddies?

say it's me or the games.

the games can't give him ANYTHING you can... and basically it sounds to me he's bored.

break the damn machine.

How to break a video game addiction?

My little brother, 8 is ALWAYS playing video games. My parents refuse to set limits on how long he can play. I feel as though he is neglected from my family. He only invites friends over who play the game, toontown. Once there over they both go into 2 different rooms & play the game. he has recently quit sports teams to play this game. When he wakes up its the first thing he does. Before he goes 2 sleep it’s the last thing he does. When we are in the car he plays portable video games. One day, I tricked him to exiting this game and the outcome was worse than a temper-tantrum. He screamed for about 30 seconds, roaring words he shouldn’t even know. Then proceeded to scratch my neck vigorously. If I didn’t push him away, he would have seriously injured me.I have confronted him about his addictions and he refused to stop.
I feel like I am loosing one of my best friends. How do I break his addiction besides setting limits and confrontation?
Thank you

Your parents are the adults and they NEED to set some time limits and rules and serious consequences if the rules arent followed. Ive allowed my son way too much time playing video games and he wouldnt even do the simplest chores and wouldnt want to participate in family time. And talk about throwing tantrums when he has to do those few simple chores before getting on to play.Video games have turned my son into rude, thoughtless, inconsiderate, temper tantrum throwing young man and Im ready to lay down the law because of that. Please get your parents to notice his attitude before its too late like I did. I am finally cutting down his time and making sure he does his chores but so far its been hard and I sure do regret not stepping in sooner to limit the video games.

Help! How to deal with severe video game addiction?

I'm a high school student with OCD and I'm failing all my classes. One of my main obstacles is my video game addiction. The games take up most of my time. It sounds silly but I can't quit no matter how hard I try. And to make things worse, I have this weird thing about not losing at all and that makes my addiction stronger. Also, I feel like I must go out with a bang. What can I do?!

throw your videogames out on the street. literally. bang.

Is there any way for a person to recover from severe video game addiction?

He quitted a renowned university majoring computer science.
He used to be a perfect 10 son, student, brother, worker.
He's doing nothing except video gaming, eating, sleeping during the day and then video gaming all night. He's been avoiding going out to meet people.

There's no easy answer to this, since there are no (well know) support groups or studies on this newer subject.

I would start by reading up on addictions of any sort - no, he's not addicted to drugs or alcohol, but the understanding of why a person gets addicted in the first place might help.

An intervention might help, especially if he's living with you. Also a psychologist that speciallizes in addicion. It'll probably be a new one to them, if you can get your son to see them, but it should help.

Tough love could help as well. He can't play video games if he's living in a homeless shelter. That's an awful thing for me to say, but it is true.

This is not an easy thing, and you have my sympathy - I've been in your position, and it's not pretty.

Video game problem?

Ok, I will finally admit I have a video game addiction problem. Luckily my grades haven't suffered yet, but when I get into the hardcore classes for my degree I know if I don't quit I will end up flunking out. I play more hours than anyone really needs to know right now and all I do is get frustrated, curse at the screen and rarely have fun, but I still play for God knows what reason. I need help on quitting badly. The only other thing I do in life for enjoyment is guitar and music. I really need help on quitting video games before it ruins the rest of my life. Serious answers only please.
WoW is a garbage kiddy game. Right now I am playing R6V for hours on end until my head hurts and then some. I already told my family about this problem and all they did was laugh. I told them to give it time but video game addiction will be in every psycologist handbook. Doing social things aren't for me. I get scared and just like to be by myself.

How to quit a video Game Addiction in 6 steps

They say that time flies when you are having fun. Whether it is considered an actual psychological condition or not, the symptoms of "addiction" affect the addicted and/or her surrounding in a real way. Much like gambling, the excitement of beating the beast across from you yields a rewarding feeling of accomplishment. The challenge keeps us hooked and coming back for more to fill the modern and repetitive life interesting. 3. Keep an open mind. Try different things to keep your mind distracted from the games that keep you hooked. Attempt social games that don't involve serious time commitments. Try and force yourself out of your comfort zone. Attempt learning new software, languages, or reading books about history or science, or watching movies to keep your brain challenged. Try new activities to avoid the boredom while you ease out of the habit of going on your "gaming machine" to waste time. 4. Attempt more real life activities such as competitive sports or strategic board games. Attempt...
