Is Drug Rehab the only cure for my mother's severe heroin addiction?
Rehab

Me and my mom has been on a trailer park for 2 years now. Since my father left us for his "legal family" my mom got so devastated that she resorted to heroin. Every Monday she would go under the bridge which is about a few blocks away from our trailer to buy her stash from spoiled white-suburban kids. I feel so helpless because I don't have the spine to stop my mom from destroying her life. My only option now is to place her under a rehab program in the hope of saving her from her addiction. Is this a wise decision? or must I try to talk some sense in her before placing her under a rehab program?

Honey I'm sorry to tell you but the decision is not yours to make. Your mom has to do this herself because she want to or else it would be a waste of time. As a recovering alcoholic I've had much experince with this. I did rehab 3x because I was told by the people that love me "this is what you need to do" but I wasn't ready. It took a 4th time and it being my decision that "enough was enough" for it to actually work. Your mom has got to want this for herself. Lots of luck with your mom, you'll both be in my prayers.

Would you consider heroin addiction as one of the pressing problems of American society?
Beautiful Grounds - Michael's House

I was just wondering about this since I remembered an article that I read in a magazine about how a fairly large percentage of Americans are getting rehabilitated for heroin use every year. I always seem to hear about someone who has just gone out of rehab, or is going to be rehabilitated. I was planning on writing an article on this for our school paper, maybe it would help enlighten other students and stop them from using heroin. Your ideas and input will be very much appreciated.

Yes, I think that heroin addiction is a serious problem in America. Heroin causes serious health conditions, various infections, HIV/AIDS, and could prove to be fatal. How will America function as a healthy society if a large percentage of its inhabitants are drug addicted? And it's not just heroin, either. How about the others suffering from cocaine addiction? Or alcohol addiction?

Good luck on your article. If you want more information, just visit the links I've included below. Hope that helps.

Will a heroin addict fall again into addiction after gettin out clean from jail?
Waterfall Pool - The Canyon Drug Rehab Treatment Center

I have a boyfriend who was a heroin addict never had rehab but he was on this addiction for about a year he got locked up went to jail for about 2 weeks i see the difference in him before he was starting to look like a bumb and now hes clean smells good and dresses way better than before not bummy looking is it possible for him to fall back to his addiction even after going trhough the withdrawals while he was in jail?

A heroin addiction is a strong habit to break.

He needs to continue treatment if he plans on staying clean.

Unless he joins a recovery program or rehab, he is going
to relapse.

Best wishes

what are common struggles in early recovery from heroin addiction?
Relax Poolside - Michael's House

i'm close to someone who's been in & out of rehab for the past 16 years. clean for 8 after the 1st time, then used heroin. since then he's had 6 months or so clean at a time & then relapses. 6 months ago he went into a long term treatment program & was released after 4. but he's still lying & hiding. he cheated on the girl who stood by him almost right after he left the treatment center & she's devastated. moved out of the original sober house he went to & into another one but hasn't been back there since he moved in. the girl he cheated with didn't know he was in a relationship. he's not living with her so not sure where he stays. he's already creating another web of lies. however, he goes to meetings every day & speaks at them frequently. works all the time. sounds like he's doing okay, but is it just a cover up? lies cause guilt, shame which is what he needs to avoid. are these signs he may relapse soon? is this typical (lying, infidelity, etc ..) in early recovery?

yes; denial and deceit, craving, are all signs.
Understand, the true addict has what is known as an "addictive personality disorder". That clinical condition does not go away, and cannot be cured. It can be ameliorated, though. But regardless what he does, he is still and addict. Some drug addicts switch to gambling, because it does not effect the body like drugs.
The addict learns, at an early age, how to lie with a straight face, how to deceive, and be believed ( at least by themselves), how to steal, and how to SOUND like they have been cured.
My advice is to lose this closeness!

How do I advise my daughter to avoid a heroin addict?
The Estate - Michael's House

My 21 year old daughter just called off her October 2007 wedding to a nice, clean cut young man who she had been with for more than two years. Good call if she was unhappy. Unfortunately, she just told me that she is now dating a 20 year old guy that was in rehab in March for heroin addiction after an overdose. He is also facing criminal charges (not sure if from same incident or another). She says "everyone makes mistakes, and he is 'clean'". However, she revealed that they drink alcohol together. I know about cross addictions, if using alcohol, NOT CLEAN! Also, she could be arrested for contributing since he is not 21 and she is. Also, he told her he stole from his friends and family to feed his addiction. When her dad and I tried to talk to her calmly she became very defensive and refused to hear anything we have to say. I am very concerned about her. More pertinent information, I am actually her step-mom; her estranged mother died in May of alcohol related heart attack. Any advice?

its very refreshing that you as a parent are concerned about her lifestyle and her choices, however as a recovering addict myself, i can tell you that you are fighting a losing battle. a person is not going to change until they are ready. it might take heartache, jail, or a near death experience, but someone who is not willing to listen or is not willing to admit they have a problem is not going to change. your daughter may not have the same drug addiction issues as her boyfriend but she is most likely a co-dependent enabler. which is just the same as an addict. she will first need to acknowledge that her behavior is dangerous before she will be willing to change it. dont give up on her though, let her know you dissaprove but that you will still be there for her if she ever needs you. it might be time to back off a little bit and allow her room to make the mistakes necessary for her to realize her problem. good luck to you both.
