I saw a center for internet addiction recovery. Are we addicted to internet?

will it be listed as a mental illness or something like a psychological disorder? I didn't get it.

Internet Addiction! Let’s develop some new drugs and medical specialties...more bucks for the doctor and the drug companies and more room for people to sit around calling themselves victims. I'll bet a lot more people are "addicted" to watching TV 10 hours a day than they are to the Internet, so where's the drug for that? This is just a tactic to make more money for the medical establishment. Some doctors have opened private clinics and claim they can cure internet addiction. They developed weird tests, like some survey questions to measure levels of your internet addiction and diagnose your problem. This is a load of crap and anyone who believes in such things is obviously mentally weak. It's sad that people have to make up a "mental disorder" to account for their lack of self control. I'm not addicted to using the internet but the fact of matter is there's a difference between an addiction and compulsive behavior. when am at work and there is nothing going on or at home and am bored, the best thing that I can do is logging and chat or discover new things or watch a movie or shop online , I don't call it addiction.

Let me try to explain what I think addictions mean. This is a being abnormally tolerant to and dependent on something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming. Even if we say it’s an addiction, it will never be far worse then any addiction to drugs, alcohol or cigarettes because the use of technology is something that is acceptable in our society, because technology is easily attainable in here USA. Can we say Obama and John McCain are addicted to politics? Are we addicted to fast foods or gas? Many people feel depressed sometime when they can’t get on the comp. it’s like another world that a lot of us go to escape. I found out people like to spend many hours to check eBay, Craiglist, playing online, chatting, yahoo answers or whatever. That’s what you like to do.

Doctors who claim this term, “addiction” can be applied to any number of problematic behaviors Interactive gaming compulsion, Net compulsion, Cyber sexual addiction and many more. One of the funniest medical terms I ever heard was Internet addiction disorder (IAD) Let the drug companies produce “cybernol” for internet addicts…

If your internet usage is taking its toll on your body and your health or causing a lot of problems in your life, your love or marriage relationships, you should try to minimize using it.

Internet Addiction?

Hello.

Yes, you. You, looking at this screen for hours on end, online. You, bleary-eyed. You, an addict. Have you looked in the mirror lately? Been outside? Know what day of the week it is?

Your name was given to us by a spouse or family member who is concerned about your internet addiction. At Internetaholics Anonymous, we can help. We’re a non-profit society of recovering addicts like yourself that provides support and counseling through weekly meetings designed to help you cope with your problem.

We feature a twelve-step recovery program and in extreme cases, interventions. Although it is our firm belief that you are never “cured”, you most certainly can recover.

We have designed a brief checklist to determine if you are an addict. Do you:

1) Have twitches of the hand when you walk by your terminal?
2) Check e-mail more than five times a day?
3) Spend more time chatting than eating or sleeping?
4) Surf aimlessly with no direction, if only to be online?
5) Leave your name and information at countless sites if only to hope you’ll receive a reply one day from a company you’ll never do business with anyway?
6) Log on before important personal habits, such as meal preparation, hygiene or bodily functions?
7) Have red, swollen eyes that hang halfway out of your head?
Spend hours online on a holiday from work, where you’d usually be griping about your carpal tunnel syndrome?
9) See smoke arising from your computer or WebTV box?
10) All of the above?

If you answered yes to four or more questions (or chose #10), you have a problem. Please call us at Internetaholics Anonymous at: 1-800-LOGOFFNOWFORYOUROWNSAKE.

We’re here, we’re free, and we’re confidential. The first step to recovery is admission that you have a problem. Call us today. If you can power off to free up your phone line, that is.

Is internet addiction real?

I think I may be addicted to the internet. Is internet addiction real? I came accross this http://www.successdept.com/component/content/article/73-addiction-and-recovery/795-Caught-in-the-Net-How-to-Recognize-the-Signs-of-Internet-Addiction.html and wondered if anyone had read it?

Internet addiction can be very serious. Many everyday people have lost jobs, friends, and loved ones simply because they could not beat thier internet habit. I recommend you seek some help. Here is a site that has addiction information and a directory of addiction treatment centers so you can help. http://www.addictionselfhelp.com

That's against the law. Get yourself licensed if you plan to charge, otherwise volunteer if you wish to help others.
