Internet Addiction?

Hello.

Yes, you. You, looking at this screen for hours on end, online. You, bleary-eyed. You, an addict. Have you looked in the mirror lately? Been outside? Know what day of the week it is?

Your name was given to us by a spouse or family member who is concerned about your internet addiction. At Internetaholics Anonymous, we can help. We’re a non-profit society of recovering addicts like yourself that provides support and counseling through weekly meetings designed to help you cope with your problem.

We feature a twelve-step recovery program and in extreme cases, interventions. Although it is our firm belief that you are never “cured”, you most certainly can recover.

We have designed a brief checklist to determine if you are an addict. Do you:

1) Have twitches of the hand when you walk by your terminal?
2) Check e-mail more than five times a day?
3) Spend more time chatting than eating or sleeping?
4) Surf aimlessly with no direction, if only to be online?
5) Leave your name and information at countless sites if only to hope you’ll receive a reply one day from a company you’ll never do business with anyway?
6) Log on before important personal habits, such as meal preparation, hygiene or bodily functions?
7) Have red, swollen eyes that hang halfway out of your head?
Spend hours online on a holiday from work, where you’d usually be griping about your carpal tunnel syndrome?
9) See smoke arising from your computer or WebTV box?
10) All of the above?

If you answered yes to four or more questions (or chose #10), you have a problem. Please call us at Internetaholics Anonymous at: 1-800-LOGOFFNOWFORYOUROWNSAKE.

We’re here, we’re free, and we’re confidential. The first step to recovery is admission that you have a problem. Call us today. If you can power off to free up your phone line, that is.

Causal Analysis Essay on INTERNET ADDICTION and OBSESSION. Help me internet users! Causes!?

I need to get started on a Causal Analysis Essay, the first one ive ever done and need some help to get the ball rolling.

I am doing it on Internet Addiction, rather Obsession and I am told that I need to generate a list of causes. Also a list of Solutions. This is where i'm stuck. What indeed are the causes of internet addiction?

Funny, im asking internet users here on Yahoo. :-)

Here's a link to my professors page that has some help yet i'm racking my brain on the causes and possible solutions.

Immediate Causes, Hidden Causes, Obvious Causes, Perpetuating Causes, Remote or Background Cases ...I need. Thanks!

i think the biggest cause is neccesity. In order to stay on top of things in this modern world, research and work on the internet is crucial to be ahead of the game. I think the internet has also replaced typical ways of communication, such as the telephone, so instead of chatting on the phone for an hour, you will chat on the internet 4 an hour instead. For younger kids it has become a playground of sorts. Instead of playing a board game with friends, why not play an online game? its a change in culture. For researchinga project, instead of spending a few hours at the libarary, ul spend a few hours on the internet instead. As far as solutions, i don't think there is a solution, until the internet become replaced by superior technology, which is not likely to happen 4 a long time. I guess parents limiting the amount of time their kids have online might be a solution, but as more and more things become linked to the internet, spending less time online will be harder and harder.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

How do you deal with someone who has a serious internet addiction problem?

Normally, I could care less if someone is a bit addicted to the 'net, but in this case the situation has gotten so bad that the person doesn't seem to be able to distinguish between reality and the internet in some cases.

It's worsened to the point were he barely leaves his desk, he spends 14 plus hours a day online, is now suffering from sleep deprivation (getting around 3 hours sleep max), eats only candy and noodles. Has stopped exercising and spending time outside. This has been going on for many months but he's gotten extremely irritable, paranoid, and damn near delusional over the last month or so.

The only topic of conversation he talks about IS the internet. The person I am talking about is not a young kid, he's a senior citizen. How do you deal with a old man who has gotten completely obsessed with the internet?

Until the last paragraph, I thought you were describing me.

Talk to him about taking breaks at regular intervals. Go out and eat or see a movie. Get him out of the house. Maybe you could set an alarm to go off every hour or 2 hours to make him get up and do something else for 15 or 30 minutes. That's probably what I would do if I was having the same problem.

Older people don't usually need much sleep so if his health doesn't appear to be at risk, that might not be a problem. Different people need different amounts of sleep. His diet should be something you keep an eye on, because given enough time, if all you eat is candy and noodles, you WILL die. He needs to be getting his vitamins and minerals.

Maybe you could start getting him to help you cook or something. Plant a garden and work on it together. To treat an addiction, sometimes it's best just to replace the activity and as time goes on, increasing the amount of alternative activities that he's involved in. Start a game night with friends or engage him with chess, checkers, etc. Start taking walks together in the mornings or evenings to help him work off the stress that tends to stack up when all you do is sit in front of a screen. It's not natural to sit in a chair all day. Get his blood flowing a little each day and you'll instantly see a change in his attitude. Excersize is an amazing stress release and helps balance the chemicals in the body as well as giving him a change to socialize. Balancing his diet will also go a long ways in improving his energy levels and attitude.

Good luck.

What are the steps towards breaking a severe addiction?

Anything of the sort, whether it be t.v, sex, drugs, internet, money, or whatever the severe case is.

How do you break this, without seeking professional help?

It is possible, so without going to a mental facility, or seeking help, can one over come this addiction on their own.

With the help of no others, how can this be done?

Thanks for your input to the answer.
I'm not saying I have an addiction, and getting group therapy isn't a choice.

I'm speaking about if someone has a severe addiction that they need to break, and want to do it on their own. Whats needed? Thanks.

You definitely need to convince yourself, that it is IMPORTANT for you to quit. Even if you already know that, and are aware that you want to, you still may need some convincing.

Also, another tip I found out, any kind of addiction can be solved if you base your solution around the twelve steps, just model them to your problem, and viola, you have guidelines.

I may also suggest that you try to find someone with your same problem, or someone you can talk to when your feeling weak, whether they're online or over the phone or someone you can meet up with, just have someone.

And stay away from triggering surrounding. Meaning, if you have an addiction to television, try to stay out of the house, try to go for walks, be out with people. Just make sure your not allowing yourself to easily fall back.

And just tell yourself, no matter how hard it is, all of your pain, is completely worth it, if you get the right result.

Even after you feel like you've broken your addiction, try to keep going with your guidelines and such, you want to try and avoid a relapse.

  • China: A youth beaten to death because of Internet addiction

Last month, the Chinese Ministry of Health announced that electroshock treatment for “internet addiction” should be suspended. However, it doesn't mean that clinic for treating “Internet addiction” has given up the use of torture.

Recently in Aug 03, a 16-year-old male student, surnamed Deng, was beaten to death in a “youth center” at Pangyu, Guangzhou. According to news report, Deng was sent to and locked up at the youth center in the afternoon on 1st of August . By 3 a.m, he was certified dead by local health authority. Several trainers from the youth center were arrested and charged for beating Deng to death.

The report also mentioned that Deng parent had paid RMB 7000 yuans to the center for one month's service for “helping their children to build confidence and get rid of bad habit”, in this case, Internet addiction. The center was run like a prison house and all the children there were under 24 hours strict monitor. The contract said that the center “would not exclude the use of suffering and punishment in order to educate the children. But the measure would not be harmful to the children's health.”
