What are some basic signs of a gambling addiction?

I'm afraid that someone I care for deeply may be addicted to gambling. How can I know for sure, and how could I address them about this situation?

Ask to borrow increasing amounts of money. Loses time from work. Lost a job or a relationship that was important. Change in attitude, anger, argues, distant, uncaring. Says they have quit but you know they haven't. Brag and lie about winning and tries to minimize losses. Depression. Bills are not being payed. Gambles to try and get back(even). Starts to break the law, fraud, forgery, theft. Health starts to decline. Loses interest in family, job, hobbies. No explanation for whereabouts. The increased need to gamble more often with greater amounts. These are just some that come to mind and there are probably 100 more. The hardest part is the same as it is with any addiction, if the person cannot recognize they have a problem it's almost impossible to help them or for them to help themselves. You can try talking to them and bring to their attention the damage being caused by their actions and offer your support in their recovery, but after that it's pretty much up to them.

What are signs of a gambling addiction that can be hard or misleading to detect?

I have a friend that goes gambling maybe about once every 3 to 4 months but once he gambles its like a bindge, and he swears he is not addicted because he still is responsible for paying his bills and working, but to me when I see him gamble he seems to be getting high off of it, he believes he can control "Luck". When the money is gone he calls and has people wire him money,he will gamble for the whole weekend without much sleep, when he he losses and its all said and done he is so mean and uptight. It sounds like an addiction , Is it? Im not familiar with it at all, I get confused because he is responsible for his car note, and other bills and has nice things that are pricey. Help me out with this one.

He dose have a gambling addiction...

it is a need that is being indulged... just cause it's not all the time doesn't mean it's not there....

I think he feels though that he must need to blow off some steam... to risk loss since he has everything he wants just about maybe the taste of putting some of it on the line and losing it gives him some sort of satisfaction, but when he dose feel the loss he is angered by it and begins to hurt people around him and himself to with his blood pressure.

All in all it's a problem but one that isn't so much harm unless he starts doing it more and more... and the things he dose have start disappearing from around him.

He just doesn't fit the profile of a person addicted to gambling.... cause you see them as the person that has nothing and gives everything they own until they are poor. in his case though he has room to lose a few things and still look the same.

He might be a little of a controlling person to, thinking he can control luck.....

Luck is Random....

You seem to be getting tennis elbow when you don't even play tennis.

Are these signs of a Gambling Addict?

They say the first step to help is admitting you have a problem.
Well, maybe the answer is so obvious but I refuse to admit it.

Lately, I just begun to play the Lottery..never have won.
But now I can't help but to spend money away on it. I'm in my early twenties so my income isn't too great.

Now, instead of going out to the movies with friends or a drink at the bar like I use to do, I think about putting that disposable money into lottery tickets. Like, instead of 10 bucks in the theater, I can buy 10 dollars worth of tickets..

BUT - I don't spend that much on tickets..only like 10 dollars a week.
Which in a month is about 10% of my disposable income (that is - once I finish paying off bills).

Signs of addiction, or one in progress?

Maybe you like to gamble. Lots of people do.
Some people give 10% to church, some people go to the racetrack.
There's nothing wrong with gambling or playing the lotto. If it's more fun to spend $10 on scratchoffs, than on a movie that's your call. When you are spending money you don't have trying to get even- then you've got the kind of problem people are going to talk about.
I would say until you've won a significant amount of money, it's very hard to develop a gambling compulsion. How does someone get addicted to losing?

You feel the dire need to try out something new in your life for the very reason that you have come to realize that now is probably the best time to go in search of your life’s ultimate meaning and purpose. In your gradual but consistent attempts, you come to realize that looking for one’s main purpose in life is indeed very difficult. Instead of pushing on trying your best to succeed, a certain sense of desperation overpowers you and you decide on giving up.

Instead of achieving your ultimate goal of finding your life’s purpose and possibly becoming a much better person than you already are, you only get to achieve one of your main goals and that is to try something new; something that would best capture your interest and sustain it for a very long period of time. However, instead of being able to engage in leisurely activities like sports, or enrolling in schools that can hone your skills, you gravely decide on pursuing another path. Without you knowing it, you opt for something much more fun and exciting, and that is gambling…
