Why don't gambling addicts get it?

I for the life of me,don't understand why people who are gambling addicts can't get it or understand that gambling is a self destructive behavior. I mean people are always looking at a way to get rich quick and why are so many people,"willing,"to just throw their hard earned money away when they gamble?

I have never understood why people find gambling so wonderful, what is so wonderful about it? I mean people go into casinos thinking they are going to,"win big,"when in reality they just sink deeper into debt and self destruction not only with themselves, but with their family too!

Forget trying to talk to a gambling addict, because they don't think they have a problem, and you would be better off talking to a wall than to a gambling addict.

Why are so many people so blind and so stupid, thinking that gambling is the answer to all of their problems? I look forward to your responses and the best answer gets 10 points! Serious answers only please!

I don't get it either Winnie. I suspect that we both know people whose lives and families have been destroyed by this wholly destructive addiction.

I continue to be amazed as well by government's compliance - opening up casinos, perpetual new lotteries ... I know of a good man who is about to lose his entire life - his wife, his home, his reputation - because a casino opened near him & he became a gambling addict. Gambling is more socially acceptable than, say drugs or alcohol. It's probably harder to get help for it. All the same, it's a killer. I hate it.

Are there any treatment programs for people who are so dependent on gambling?

I have a friend whose father is so addicted to gambling. Even though their family needs the money for more important things, her father still uses it for gambling. I just want to know whether people like him can still change and steer away from gambling. It's really affecting my friend as well as other members of their family, and I'd just like to suggest that they get her dad treated if there are indeed treatment programs for this.

Yes, there are indeed treatment programs available for gamblers. Just like alcoholism, gambling addiction is considered as an illness. Though there is no cure and there will always be the possibility of relapse, it can be treated. You can probably suggest to your friend that they contact their local health services administration and ask about treatment centers.

How to deal with a mother who is addicted to Gambling?????????????

My father passed away in 2005. My mother recieved death benefits from him in the sum of close to 70,000. She gave 5,000 to us because my B/F bought a home in the country for our family and her. My boyfriend Co-signed a loan for her to get a new car, however we soon found out she was spending about 1200 sometimes more a week at bingo. So I made her pay off the car before she was broke. And we also paid off all her credit cards. She went through 50,000 in 5 months at bingo. After she spent all that money now she went and took 3 or 4 seperate loans out on her car and spends that money on bingo. She also got some credit cards and has them maxed out. I have tried several time to talk to her but she doesn't listen. Last night she went to bingo and won 1100.00 but she put it back into bingo with rip offs and left that night with 40.00. What should I do and where can I get help for her?

You probably should talk with professional help. I would consider talking with a psychiatrist about methods you can use to help her.

Gambling is a bad addiction for those who can't control it. I was born to figure out how to beat the game of gambling and because of it, I am up.

I realize this and have seen some of those compulsive gamblers every day when i am at the casino along with others that i know of.

Your best bet, is to talk with someone who may help the situation. For now, talk with a doctor and they can help come up with a plan when you can give more details to him/her.

Is it normal for a 13 year old to be addicted to gambling?

I'm 13 and I'm the best card player in my family. Cards is like a family activity that we do almost every night. When we pick partners, everyone wants me!!!! Anyways, my uncle is always making comments like "you'll make a great gambler when you grow up" and my mom would give him "the look"

I'm kinda addicted to gambling....is that normal?
I do play for money sumtimes. I got in trouble a couple times -.-

Think for a moment about what the word "addicted" really means.

If you enjoy playing cards, and it's not affecting your life in any way, there's nothing wrong with that.

If you enjoy playing cards so much that it becomes more important than your friends or your schoolwork, and if you start stealing money to support your habit, then it's an addiction, and that would be very, very wrong.

Keep it as a hobby, but if a time comes when you ever feel it's becoming too big to handle, stop and get help immediately.

  • A Family Addiction

The concept that addiction is a disease of the family is hitting me lately.

I work with a woman who has had a tough life, never had a break, but she has a great attitutde towards life. She’s really a good-hearted person. She talks a lot though. Sometimes we get in these conversations that just keep going and going, and I have to stop her to get back to work. But there are a lot of gems that slip through. I know she had her first kid when she was really young, so she had to grow up pretty fast to take care of the kid.

Today, she told me how her Mom has a gambling addiction, her sister has a gambling and drug addiction, her brother is an alcoholic, and how she wants to help them all, especially her mother. She wants to move out of this town to get away from certain things, but she also wants to wait until her daughter graduates from high school before she moves. She’s got 4 more years.

I was talking with her about the gambling addiction, because my Mom has the same problem. I told her how my money my Mom has blown over the years — what she used to have and what she has now — and I realized I never said that out loud before. I’m not going to say the number here, but it was pretty much a very nice house and 2 cars paid for, with about double my annual salary in the bank. Now she has a small condo, half of it mortgaged, and barely any savings. Her car is paid for, but only because she won it at work (interesting story). She declared bankruptcy about a year ago, and has no credit. Since I am an expert on the subject, I am helping her rebuild her credit. I just feel compassion for her — she’s over 60, no education, has to work in a job she doesn’t like, and has little financial security. And all the hundreds of thousands of dollars she blew she will never see again. She stopped gambling a few months ago — I think when her job started doing layoffs, she had a moment of clarity. Without this job, she couldn’t pay her mortgage. Most of the money she had to begin with was from a wrongful death lawsuit for my father’s death. The rest was from the appreciation on the house that burned down and a good insurance policy. It’s all gone. I think she feels guilty that she has nothing to give to her grandchildren (my brother’s kids).
