james l, Gambling addiction can be extremely serious. Many everyday people have lost jobs, homes, friends, and loved ones simply because they could not beat thier gambling habits. I suggest you seek some help. I found a site that has addiction information and a directory of addiction treatment centers so you can help. http://www.addictionselfhelp.com

My brother is a compulsive gambler. He recently married a young woman whose father is a compulsive gambler. The cycle is very difficult to beat. So far, my brother has not sought help for his problem.
If you need help, you can go to GA meetings. They are specifically for people who have gamblers in their lives. They were very helpful to me and my father, even though my brother wouldn't go.
I am writing a paper for one of my classes and am wondering what the general knowledge is on compulsive gambling. Do you think that drug addiction, alcoholism, or compulsive gambling has the highest negative affect on people's lives?
i don't think any of them are worse than the others. all of them will basically lead you down a path of self destruction hurting others along the way...
i live with my boyfriend and his cousin lives in the house too. he is a compulsive gambler. he work at the tropicana casino, go figure, in atlantic city and spends all of his time gambling before and after work. he has tens of thousands of dollars in credit card debt and is mooching off of my boyfriends mother- his aunt. he is 40 years old, has a girlfriend who lives in pa- their entire relationship consists of the phone and letters because he can't afford to move out... and he spends hours- 8, 9, 10 hours a day online playing gambling games as well as pogo point games... it sounds like a casino in the living room every day...
it's sad. in a pathetic way, in my opinion. people have tried to help him ebfore, family and friends... he is too stupid (not just based on the gambling issue, he has a lot of other issues too) to realize he needs help and he is leading a meaningless life...
plus, hes creepy as hell...
but like with anything, the person has to want the help. my parents have been sober from alcohol for about three months now and i know that anyone can overcome an addiction if they WANT to
Example: Compulsive gambling, addiction, reward, personality traits, and what else is there?
The psychological discussion of gambling will frequently involve discussion of various schedules of reinforcement, as well as the development of superstition.

Does Video Game Play Lead to bGambling Addiction/b? | GamePolitics
A study conducted by researchers at the University of Adelaide has linked regular video game play to gambling addiction.
Australia's ABC News reports on comments by Paul Delfabbro of the University's school of psychology. Delfabbro's team studied more than 2,500 Australian teens and found that more than half admitted to gambling within the preceding 12 months. Delfabbro commented on his findings:
If you look at those young people who are classified as pathological gamblers you will find that they do have a higher frequency of involvement with many different types of videogame. They're much more likely to play games on Xboxes and similar consoles. They are also more likely to play arcade games...
Some young people who don't have a lot of structured activities in their life... what they'll often do is spend very large amounts of time playing videogames or often be more likely to be the ones who go off to street venues to play arcade games.
Being in a gang is a structured activity, right? Let's get all these teens out of those totally random arcades and casinos and into the friendly social environs of a mafia family!

LITTLE ROCK — Rudy Garza of Bella Vista is surprised no one in state government has called him.
Garza, the only counselor in Arkansas certified in gambling addiction treatment, said he has not heard from state officials about providing counseling or training, even though the kickoff of the state lottery is just five weeks away — and the architects of the lottery have promised that addiction treatment will be available for those who need it.
“I haven’t been contacted. You’re the first one who’s actually called me about it,” Garza told an Arkansas News Bureau reporter Friday.
The law setting up the lottery mandates that at least $200,000 in unclaimed prize money go the state Department of Health each year for treatment of gambling addiction and education about compulsive gambling disorder.
Lottery Director Ernie Passailaigue has said that before unclaimed prize money begins accumulating, the lottery may provide funding for help for problem gamblers from its start-up budget. The Legislature has approved a $6 million loan to cover the lottery’s initial costs, to be repaid with lottery proceeds.
