I've been thinking of checking out a meeting in my area. I'm really not looking to lose a whole lot of weight though. Sure I have a couple extra pounds to spare, but in reality it's more an ongoing food addiction that I want to overcome. Is it worth checking out? Anyone care to share their experiences?
Try Overeaters Anonymous. That sounds more of for what you are looking. I don't know much about them, though. Last fall a group used to meet in my church across the hall from my Bible study group and where my husband has his Chatechism class. That's about all I know. Well, I was walking from the hall where the classrooms are and somebody asked me if i was coming from OA. Somebody else said I was too thin to have come from there. Of course. "Thin" people can't have food problems that are related to excess?

I have battled eating too much since I was little. I need some tips to keep my brain from thinking of going into the fridge.
You are eating your emotions ; but you are the only one who can take control of your addiction . All addiction start by a firm decision that I am in control of you [the addiction ] not the reverse . after that it will be easy to control your food and you should keep yourself busy with lots of activities and it will be a success
I binge eat religiously. Who should I seek out for help? Is this something you'd bring up to a doctor? I feel as if I had a person or a group to discuss this with on a regular basis, it would help tremendously. Like A.A., only Binge Eaters Anonymous....advice?
Overeaters Anonymous if you're in a large city, especially in the Northeast U.S. There's plenty of binge eaters, so you will feel not alone any more.
Online support groups are out there too.
A doctor should know if it is a binge/purge cycle. Weight gain is a slow killer, but purging is a lot more dangerous.
Best wishes as you search.

although most food addictions say the way to overcome it is to recognise the reason behind it - for example, unhappiness, boredom, stress.
it seems, although i am of a normal average weight, i just enjoy eating - in excess.
is there anyway i can deal with this food addiction?
What makes you think you have a food addiction? Everyone has foods that they enjoy and over-indulge in from time to time. If you are indeed "of a normal average weight", I suspect that what you are is a normal average person with weaknesses and vices. Being normal requires no explanation.
When I was younger I was caught drinking under age and ordered to go to a "substance abuse awareness" class. The way they defined something as substance abuse as opposed to a habit or an occasional moment off weakness, was that the substance causes real, tangible problems in a person's life, but the person doesn't cut back, or stop their consumption.
If you are not overweight, It is hard to see how this food addiction you think you have has caused a real problem in your life, so it is not abnormal to continue to overeat on occasions.
This must be one of the hardest addictions to beat because with other drugs the user can attempt to completely avoid the drug, but you have to eat food which is a drug in food addiction. Any advice? (besides counseling/ psychotherapy, etc)
There are no quick fixes for food addiction. Also willpower is not enough for this type of problem, you need to find a good resource in the community to help you with this.
Personally for me I have found that Dr Phil is the only one who has gotten the formula on weight loss figured out. I endorse his methods because they are medically sound and are gathered from long term reliable true tested professional sources.
