How do I know if I am a food addict? Can you tell me about the Food Addicts Anonymous process?
Crack, it's what's for dinner.

I attended a Food Addicts Anonymous meeting a couple of days ago. To join/participate one must attend several meetings. Although, I like the results heard during the meeting, I am uncomfortable declaring myself an 'addict'. In the meeting, one must introduce themselves followed by the phrase, " I am a food addict." How do I know if I am an addict? The act of labeling myself something negative, repeatedly, seems spiritually counter-productive. I am approaching gastric by-pass surgery later in the year, meeting with the surgeon next month. My hope is that this will be a successful alternative for me.

What is an addict? Well, would you go to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting just to see what it's like? Of course not. You would only go to AA because you know you have a problem with alcohol---even if the first time you go you don't want to admit how bad your problem is. An addict is someone who cannot stop whatever destructive behavior they continue to do---no matter what the consequences are of them continuing to do it.
Someone who is a food addict is someone who has a lot of problems in their life because of food. They are overweight---or even obese. Or their bodyweight can go up and down constantly. They hate being like that, they promise....SWEAR they are going to stop.....and they can't. They start to eat...they keep eating, it makes them feel horribly guilty, it hurts their body....yet they just keep right on doing it. That's a food addict.
If you can stop overeating or binge eating, give up the things you love that are so bad for you, start eating healthy, lose weight, not think about food constantly...then I guess you aren't addicted to food.
If you went to a meeting for food addicts, then you have a problem with food.....even if right now you don't want to admit how bad your problem is.

Do you have any advise for food addicts besides the usual calorie counting and exercise?
Heroin Hits Pakistan

When food becomes more important than enjoying life, including leaving one's house, how do you tell a friend what to do to gain their life back? It is such a touchy situation.

is there a method of dulling taste buds for a temporary length of time, like, 4 hours, for food addicts?
Bokeh Food

at my weight, I don't need food as much as I like food. If I could dull my taste buds for a bit at a time, maybe I could eat to live instead of live to eat!

An easy trick:
Whenever you feel like snacking, brush your teeth instead.

Did you ever notice how terrible food tastes immediately after brushing?

Are you a food addict? What do you think of food addicts?
Wasabi Kit Kat

I am addicted to food. At times it seems it is the worst thing in the world. I think it is looked down upon more than being addicted to crack. I have struggle with food. I love it and at times I do have melt downs. It is not funny, but very sad. I think women like Wynona Judd are teased for their condition, but it is something people struggle with. I hate that I always think of food and cannot stop myself. I have come to terms with my weight and know I will never be a model or even a model assistant. I want to hear from fellow food addicts, what has been your experience? If you are not a food addict what do you think of us? Honest answers please no matter how mean. I want to know others opinions.

Who cares what others think. I mean, what's not to love about food? There are so many awesome tasting foods out there and everyone is too afraid to even try them because they are afraid to gain weight..i think there isn't anything wrong with the fact that you love food..i love it too. But i'm not addicted to it.

Why do drug addicts stay skinny if they eat a normal amount of food?
REVUE at Breakfast

Why do they remain skinny when they eat the same amount of food a non druggie would eat?

Well, ya see, a 'druggie' doesn't eat all that much. Wait, let me start from the beginning.......A person who smokes a little weed is not a druggie, and if you consider them to be, then so be it, but they hardly fit into the category of being skinny cuz of drugs. The drugs that make people skinny are like meth, or cocaine, because it does not allow the impulse of hunger, yet it stimulates your appetite to the point that you don't wanna eat. It also makes your teeth fall out. Pretty tempting.
