What are the symptoms of Computer/Video Game Addiction?
Kid Playing PS3

My boyfriend plays alot of his computer game (10 hours a day, approx.) And i was wondering if theres any actual symptoms of the video game addiction? If so, what are they, besides the obvious, of playing alot, and neglecting houswork/school work, any others? Thanks!
he did quit his job about a month ago.... (a day before his game came out) but he goes to school at night time, but he normally doesnt go to all of them... only one or two of them and then comes home.

10 hours a day sounds a bit extreme. only other ones i can think of is neglect to family and friends, everyday activities such as bathing and eating, and not working or doing school, or any work for that matter by choosing to play the game instead. damn. tell him "Playing video games wont feed our future baby!" lol jk. tell him to get a job as a video game tester. he'll love that and it pays up to 80 an hour!

How do you stop a computer game/ video game addiction?
0374

I need to stop playing video games and playing on the computer so much. How can I stop myself?

Addiction to anything is very hard to overcome, especially if it's not something that's directly affecting your health. I'm sure though that it is probably affecting your family life, social life, and I have heard of people getting arthritis and carpal tunnel from playing games too much.

I know of somebody who spent his days and night playing a game on his computer and had to eventually learn how to play with his left hand because he damaged his right one so badly. I know it is hard to let go of anything that brings you comfort and happiness even if it is affecting your life in negative ways. Try going to this blog, it is very helpful and you can contact the writer and get support.

Good luck!

Ridding myself of a computer/video game addiction?
Memories of olden time

I find it very difficult to occupy myself unless I'm on a computer/video game of some sort. I think its safe to say I'm addicted, so if anyone has some suggestions/ideas as to how I can break this, please help.

aside from chucking the computer out of the window, you have to exert will power... go outside, read a book, clean your room, bake some cookies, plant a garden, play solitare with actual cards, find other things to do to occupy your time, to minimize your obsession with games...

I need advice about stopping my computer game addiction, help?
Baldur's Gate

I'm a 19 y/o college student at a fairly prestigious college and I just can't seem to quit playing computer games. It's really taking over my life! It all started with World of Warcraft. I played it for hours on end last year and it really screwed my grades up. I finally managed to quit, thinking that Call of Duty 2 was any better. I was mistaken and I am currently just as addicted to CoD2 as I was to WoW. I don't have any problems with socializing and I'll go out with friends fairly often, but I often play games as soon as I get back to my dorm room. I need some advice from ex-gamers and other people who are familiar with this problem of video game addiction. Help me please!

You have made the first step and that is admitting that you have a problem.
Sit down and make a schedual for your life. Limit your game time. Get out and go to the guy, or hang out with friends. Get a part time job. You might need to stop cold turkey. And learn that your life doesn't stop just because you aren't gaming.

Another thing is that when you have an addiction.......you need to replace it with a good habit. Something else that will give you the buzz that you get from playing your games.

Tell yourself that you have power over the game and it is time for them to NOT have power over you. When you feel compelled to play. so set your alarm clock or a timer for 15 minutes, if you still want to play then play. But, it often breaks your urge and you can get into something else.

Help I am a video game/ warcraft/ computer/ internet addict HOW DO I STOP!!?
Please allow me to introduce myself........

I am totally addicted to the computer, war craft, video games, and the internet. The video game addiction started six years ago, I played my first console video game and was hooked. The War craft addiction started last year when I received War craft as a birthday present. And the computer/ internet addiction, well that started only recently (like 7 or 8 months ago). I am so addicted that when I wake up (which is usually early like 6-7 a.m.) I will go on the computer for up to 3 hours until I get hungry and go downstairs to get food and start the day. I need help to not become addicted!!

perfectly normal.

i have the same thing, but im stopping now.

they thing i do is, im starting to go out more often, play pool or bowling whatever.

in the internet, i just try to go onto forums or some photoshop instead ot my usual dota or tower defence on warcraft bnet.

its just a phase your going through, i was a major hardcore gamer, now im just a hobbyist on the computer, soon you will get bored and then stop, since your playing for a long time.

The old geezers must have been worried that we’re playing World of Warcraft too much… or for most of us, maybe surfing ecchi websites too much. reSTART has opened America’s first clinic to heal patients with video game addiction, computer addiction and Internet addiction disorder. The clinic is located in Fall City, WA. Video game and Internet addiction disorder clinics already exist in China and the Netherlands.

The program, called the , costs $14,500 USD and is 45-days long. During the 45-days, patients receive psychotherapy, group counseling, nutritional education, personalized fitness plans and adventure outings.

The strategy is to remove patients from their video gaming, computer and Internet activities, and put them in a segregated location where they participate in various outdoor activities and develop everyday life skills.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report recently that concluded that gamers are more likely to be overweight and suffer mental health problems.

Book Review on bVideo Game Addiction/b « Weissbluth Method

Recently, I have been very interested by these stories originating in China about “Internet Addiction.”  From the news items, it appears to be a serious problem there and I was curious to learn more about it.  I went online and typed in “internet addiction” and was directed to a book called, “Video Games and Your Kids:  How Parents Stay in Control” (Cash and McDaniel).  Addiction medicine is a topic that is relatively not emphasized in pediatric training so I decided to pick up the book.

The book’s focus was gaming addiction which was the closest I could find to internet addiction in my search.  I assumed that enough gaming took place on computers to be relevant for the topic and also that the mechanism of gaming and internet addiction were similar.   The organization of the book starts by defining gaming addiction and its processes.  It proceeds to explain addiction as it relates to varying age groups.  The language of the book reflects the author’s goals of treating addiction:  They use words like “withdrawal” and “intervention”.  Instead of describing “adaptability,” they use the phrase “frustration tolerance” (which I liked a lot).  The use of addiction terminology helped me appreciate this as a medical phenomenon despite how socially accepted internet and video games are. However, I was more skeptical of the discussions on “love addiction” as it relates to meeting others while playing World of Warcraft
