My cousin has a serious addiction to crack cocaine. It has come to the time where she needs rehabilitation. She lives in Florida but has family in Illinois. Does anyone know of a good rehabilitation place (in-patient) in Florida or in Illinois where she can go for treatment? Thank you.

Totally get her out of Florida. She is in her element there and needs to get away from an area where she knows how to score dope. Try Iowa, close enough to Illinois for people to visit.

p.s. She will only do as well as she wants to do though. The addiction is a mental one, and while getting it out of your system is quick, the thought process will always be there. Anytime she is bored or down the total abandonment of caring about life that coke and crack gives will try to call her back.

What about all the habits in the world that lead to crime. Why pick on the cig smokers all the time? Alcohol can cause fatal accidents-cigs DO NOT IMPAIR YOUR JUDGEMENT.

It was difficult for me to quit smoking.
Tried for several years, many times.
Although I have not smoked now for years, I remember the psychological comfort of it.
And it does not bother me at all to sit in the smoking section; sometimes I choose to because I still think I'd enjoy smoking.

But the diminished effects of one addiction as compared to another does not make it more acceptable. Any addiction is to be avoided.

Can you keep the addiction under control? I know my spouse has gone on binges about once a year. But that is the only time I am aware of his drug use. Is his mood changes the only way?

It may be possible to hide crack use for awhile, but sooner or later, it will reveal itself. Besides moodiness, look for other signs like tremor, fidgeting, nail-biting, dilated pupils, etc.
As I see it, there's no such thing as keeping an addiction under control. Addiction means that the drug controls the person.
Having said this, I must ask:
Have you confronted him about his drug use?
If not, you need to. Demand that he enter treatment & stick with it, or you'll leave him. Be prepared to make good on your threat. If you have children, take them with you.
Your personal safety & long-term happiness (& your children's, if any) depend on how you deal with this.

I have been through many detox and substance abuse programs. My father was the southeasts largest supplier of cocaine in the 80`s and 90`s. I had him arrested thinking that if I could take away the ease of access I could take away my addiction. I only made my addiction more expensive as now I have to pay for the cocaine that I use. I have cut way back (from 1/2 ounce daily in 1990 to several grams a year). The problem is when I get started I can`t stop until I have no more money. THis causes a strain on my marriage (to my fourth wife) as I do not come home until I`m broke and hurting.
Please someone give me some advice, if you have ever seen the movie where johnny depp plays the drug kingpin, this was my life in the 80`s and 90`s, but not as the kingpin, but the son caught up in the game. We had police paid off, planes running dope from Mexico to USA. I saw corruption, racketeering, money laundering, even murder of DEA officials and witnesses for the state. This left me scarred foreve

I am extremely sad for you and your family. I've never been addicted to crack so I can't claim to understand what you are going through. I do know that it sounds like you are wanting to help yourself, which is a great step.
You need to continue getting support through the substance abuse programs. I don't think you will ever completely overcome this addiction, but don't stop trying to quit.
You were just a child when you were exposed to this drug, so it was not your fault at all. I'm sure many people here will say mean things to you, but ignore them, they aren't worth it.
