I just came accross a research study where scientists have found that ingesting sugar affects a person's brain the same way ingesting Cocaine does.
http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn10210-obese-may-be-food-junkies-with-constant-cravings.html
A sweet taste is something everyone enjoys. And I wonder if the obese people are simply food addicts who cannot stop eating pleasing foods the way drug addicts cannot stop taking pleasing drugs?
Perhaps there are other parallels between drugs and foods.
People in the Andes of South America chew natural cocca leafs without much addiction or ill effects. But when people purify and concentrate cocaine into white powder, then it becomes highly addictive and deadly.
Could it be the same story with sugar in the food? Sugar is good and healthy within natural fruits and vegetables. But when you purify and concentrate it, then it becomes highly addictive and deadly too?
Is sugar an unrecognized addictive drug?
I absolutely believe there can be food addictions, often people use food to placate themselves or eat when they are bored etc... but I think, especially in America the biggest cause of obesity is lack of knowledge.
Our portions here are huge, we eat way too many overly processed pre-packaged meals (often laden with fat and something worse than sugar "high fructose corn syrup". Also don't get me started on fast food and the complete and utter lack of nutrients within so many calories.
Most doctors here let alone lay people know very little about nutrition and the importance of getting proper nutrients and the dangers of too many food additives.
Our foods are so saturated in excess garbage in this society and most people are unaware of what they are truly eating.
Also our dairy cows tend to be injected with hormones and antibiotics and other garbage which in turn goes down to the people drinking the milk. If its designed to "fatten up" a dairy cow, its not a real shock that it does the same to us.
Also many obese people are malnourished, I know that sounds counter-intuitive but its true. When we feed the body garbage and it doesnt get the nutrients it needs, it triggers hunger and thus a viscious cycle of overeating the same incorrect foods takes hold.
I do believe sugar can act as a drug. I love a good piece of chocolate now and then for the same reason, however I don't think that in and of itself is the cause of the obesity problem. It certainly does contribute though and is an excellent point.

wher'd you get it from?
had a long standing addiction to cocaine 4 9 years but managed to now stop using with the help of counselling cbt, service user groups etc but my problem now is bad anxiety and depression.i taker the occasional diazepam evry few days which helps but apart from dat nothing.totally clean.does any1 who has been in the same situation have a similar story to tell or any advice.i also exercise daily and eat a nutritious diet.
i only get prescribed 14 5mg diazepam a month and i refuse to take any more as i dont want to develop more problems and replace one addiction with another.do you think i am doing the right thing or wud any1 else suggest anything else?
i only take diazepam once every 3 or 4 days so as not to develop a dependency.mainly to help me sleep and to give me a break, as any1 who as used stimulants for a long period of time will know what cronic insomnia does to you.exercise is the main thing that has helped me though...gud advice though from simon w, vvvvvvv, and parker.many thanks.
Firstly, many congrats on having come off cocaine; fighting an addiction is probably one of the hardest things you will ever have to do. It sounds like you have chosen a healthier lifestyle, but are having difficulty reaping the rewards at present.
All illicit stimuants intefere with the body's natural mood, immune, impulse and coping mechanisms. It is not unusual for people to suffer low moods and anxiety after such long periods of use. The main problem is in the past if you felt like this you may have relied on artificial relief, i.e. cocaine. All the 'highs' you experienced were from cocaine using up all your stored energy reserves. Plus you can no longer use drugs to block out the reality of life. Now you are drained, low, sensitive and your body/brain is still trying to reset itself to how it was before you started taking cocaine.
Diazepam is highly addictive and dangerous in high amounts and/or when mixed with alcohol. If you are taking it, then it should be prescribed at a set amount per day and regulated by an appropriate service and doctor. Taking it on an on/off basis only upsets the body's regulatory system, as when you take it you feel much calmer. But then when you don't the anxiety is worse as there is no diazepam to dampen the emotions. If the correct dose were to be prescribed, the dosage could be reduced as your mood elevated leaving you in more control. I can understand you not wanting to increase your dosage for fear of further addiction, but unless something changes you may end being stuck in limbo anyway.
You may want to see a doctor, have a mental health exam and then be reccomended a course of treatment. This may involve anti-depressants. There are CBT and service user groups for anxiety and depression too, it sounds like these have worked for you before.
Find out what agencies/support is available in your local area. Most cities now have stimulant groups where they teach you breathing exercises, coping mechanisms, head massages, EST (electro-stimulation therapy), enhancing social support networks and using nutrition to boost your mood/energy levels.
All the best, don't give up!

Symptoms of Cocaine Addiction - Do You Know Them?
Symptoms of cocaine addiction can be very apparent, although there are still a few that may go unnoticed. In many ways, the use of cocaine can damage the health and wellbeing of a person. It is exactly for this reason why a lot of people experience several health ailments related to cocaine abuse. Cocaine addiction is well regarded as a disease by experts in the medical field. One of the physical symptoms of cocaine addiction is the presence burns on the user’s clothing or skin. Due to the substance being smoked with the use of a glass pipe, the heat may cause burns on fingertips, leading to scars.
There are also internal symptoms of cocaine addiction. Such symptoms may be expressed through cardiovascular abnormalities as well as unhealthy physiological signs. Due to the effect of cocaine in the body, this may also lead to symptoms involving depression and irregularity in heartbeat. If the person is not immediately recovered from the addiction, this may lead to serious heart problems as well as sudden death. Aside from the physical and health manifestations brought about by symptoms of cocaine addiction, you may also notice that dependents can be intentionally isolating themselves from their loved ones.
