I'm trying to find out some info about whether the Coast Guard will accept someone who has gone through alcohol/addictions treatment. If you are honest on your SF-86, it shouldn't be a problem as long as you finished the treatment and are discharged from the facility right? Thanks.
GREAT question!!
This is one that needs to be asked to a recruiter - but until then, I am sure there would be some sort of waiting period, like at least XX years between when the person was released from treatment until they could sign the paperwork to enlist.

I heard some kids in school talking about a holistic approach in relation to drug and alcohol addiction. Does anybody know more about it? I'm just interested.
I think it's a special program given to people who are suffering from alcoholism and drug addiction. They provide treatment and services to help the patient recover faster. There's a website about the Holistic Approach. I added the link below. It's really informative.

I know I have a drinking problem but I was just too proud to admit it. Now, I am ready to get some help. I don't want to waste my life on alcohol. Where can I get treatment?
I am proud of you because you are bold enough to admit your problem. You are already on the first step to recovery. Go to the links I have posted here and you will find details about a rehab center in your area. You may also call the Nationwide Addiction Assistance Helpline, whose number is also posted on the website.

I have a friend who stopped drinking alcohol two days ago and she has been experiencing what seems to me like withdrawal symptoms. She's always craving alcohol and gets clammy hands. I told her these are signs that she should get herself treated for addiction but she won't listen to me. Am I right? If so, what can I do?
Your friend does have mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms. (other signs would be restlessness, insomnia, dreams of alcohol, hallucinations...) These are indeed signs that she should get herself treated for her alcohol addiction. The best thing you can do is to get her checked up by a doctor and he will then assess your friend's condition. Your friend needs to be treated for her withdrawal. If she's not swayed by your pleas, you can do an alcohol intervention for her.
It's easier for me to open up to strangers than to bother my family and friends about this. I have been craving for alcohol more and more now, and have started experiencing withdrawal symptoms as well. I want this to stop. I need to talk to someone about this, but not face to face. Any ideas?
It looks as if you're ready to undergo treatment now. You can call 800-559-9503. It's a helpline for people with problems such as yours. There'll surely be someone on the other end of the line who would be willing to help you out. You can also join forums over the internet and get to discuss alcoholism with other people. Good luck! I do hope you get yourself schlepped over to a treatment center soon, though.

Promises Urges Parents to Watch for Binge-Drinking Issues as b.../b
According to a report from the US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), drinking-related deaths among students aged 18 to 24 have increased steadily from 1,440 a year in 1998 to 1,825 in 2005. Forty-five percent of college students admitted to binge drinking in the past month, and 29 percent of students admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol.
In addition, recent studies are showing an alarming trend of women being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Nationwide, 126,000 women were arrested for DUI in 1998—a number that climbed to 162,000 in 2007. This could be due to a societal change, with women being more likely to take risks and engage in binge drinking, especially in college.
Although an increasing amount of colleges are teaming up with local police and community members to curb college drinking, more needs to be done at home to educate young people on the devastating effects of binge drinking.
Dr. David Sack, CEO of Promises Treatment Centers, addiction treatment programs in Malibu and West Los Angeles, says that parents can help prevent their children from binge drinking in college by staying involved in their children’s lives and by talking to them about the consequences of drinking heavily.
...Government Concerned About Drinking in Kenya
Almost half of Kenya’s adult population drinks alcohol, and some drink too much, putting their children at risk. Voice of America’s Cathy Majtenyi describes a “family entertainment” spot in Nairobi where children play and parents drink nearby. Scenarios like these are disturbingly common in Kenya, says Jennifer Kimani, CEO of the government’s National Campaign Against Drug Abuse.
"The culture of parents going to entertainment joints or hotels, and they sit in one corner and they take their beer or alcohol until they get very drunk. At the same time the children are playing just next to where they are and the children are running back, sometimes sipping daddy’s drink, mummy’s drink, and then they go back and continue," Kimani said.
A recent national survey found that 40 percent of Kenyans between the ages of 15 and 65 consume alcohol. Children exposed to alcohol can face enormous consequences, such as becoming dependent on alcohol themselves.
