Does drinking coffee help reduce the addiction or daily cravings of alcohol. Can one develops an addiction to coffee? (from the caffeine)
Will the coffee addiction ever have a chance of switching over from alcohol to coffee?
This is for a research paper on an experimental analysis of behavior treatment.
The act of drinking coffee will not replace the craving for alcohol and it will not lessen it. Addiction is the unrelenting physical and mental need for a mind altering substance or high. An alcoholic in recovery has to be vigilant about not cross addicting, which is what you are touching on. And coffee, in large amounts, is a stimulant. So is tobacco, which is why so many addicts smoke.
Addicts that gravitate toward 'stimulants', like coke or meth, diet pills, etc can take off with coffee or energy drinks. Also, any addict can cross addict to a whole different area, like gambling, sex, video games... It's the mind going to unhealthy amounts of something to escape. Bottom line.
If someone is 'addicted' to caffeine (and I wonder how you are using the word; clinically or casually?) they could move to alcohol, I guess, to change to a mind altering substance but I don't see that as a big danger. I see the other way around as a danger because caffeine is seen an 'safe' and larger amounts can creep up and create a need. I have seen former meth addicts relapse starting with energy drinks.....
Hope this helps.

We're tasked to do a research on alcohol addiction and alcohol rehabs. I figured I might as well do interviews also because I really need the extra credit, hence, the search for alcohol rehabs. Any suggestions?
It's fairly easy to find alcohol rehabs. You can look through the local yellow pages and there'll surely be a list there of the alcohol rehabs in your area. The links below will yield some information too. You can also ask doctors, healthcare providers, or call your local health services administration to know more. Good luck! :)
Dear Mr Rajiv,
Yes, BACLOFEN, is being studied for alcohol dependence. However, studies are only preliminary and not yet widely used. Gamma-aminobutyric acid-B agonist (means which acts in consonance) baclofen has been shown to be promising as an effective treatment for reducing alcohol consumption. 30-mg daily baclofen dose was found useful in reducing drinking, subclinical anxiety and depressive symptoms, and craving in alcohol-dependent subjects.
Please consult your doctor before using this drug for yourself or suggesting to others. As you may be aware, baclofen has several side effects.
CAUTION!
Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities while on baclofen. Baclofen may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities.
• Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking baclofen.
• Do not stop taking baclofen suddenly. Stopping suddenly may cause seizures or hallucinations. Your doctor will want to gradually reduce you dose.
I am not aware of any study on use of baclofen for drug addictions other than alcohol.

Col (Dr) KE Rajan
I'm doing a research regarding various addictions (not just alcohol and illegal drugs, but prescription drugs and gambling as well) and would like to find more information about them directly from people who are dealing with these issues on a regular basis.
Whoa, you're looking for a lot of information there, buddy.
Well, I do hope that the links I have included below will be able to help you. You can also look through the local yellow pages. There will surely be contact information of addiction treatment centers there. Good luck! I hope you get all the information you need.
researches say that every alcohol addictions start with few, social drinking. than it sometimes becomes big problem and serious desiease. so does it means firstly we dont start drinking? and after alcoholism how can a person prepare her/himself want to quit it? cos main thing is want to do it.
It is true that occasional drinking (socially) becomes an addict and very few alcoholics have the courage and confidence to quit drinking. One should have positive mind and ambition to quit drinking. I quit drinking after my drinking for 35 years. Alcoholic Anonymous (spread world over) also could be contacted.

Parental Attitudes and Teen Substance Use
Every year for the past 14 years, The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University has conducted the National Survey of American Attitudes on Substance Abuse: Parents and Teens. The results of this year’s study strongly indicated that parental attitudes about substance use — their own and their children’s — significantly impacts teen substance use.
“Perhaps our most important finding from so many years of surveying teens and our other research is this: a child who gets through age 21 without smoking, using drugs or abusing alcohol is virtually certain never to do so,” CASA researchers stated. “And, for better or for worse, no one has greater power to influence a teen’s decision whether to drink or use drugs than his parents.”
Parental Behavior
What parents do, say and expect all matter when it comes to keeping teens from getting involved with substance use. The behaviors modeled by parents significantly affect rates of teen substance use. Researchers found that one-third of teens have seen one or both of their parents drunk, and those teens are more than twice as likely to get drunk in a typical month, three time likelier to use marijuana and three times likelier to smoke cigarettes.

The makers of the anti-convulsant drug Topamax (active ingredient topiramate)– now most often prescribed for migraine prevention – hope that it can also help alcoholics loose their desire to drink. The goal is to give Topamax to alcoholics who want to quit drinking – even before they have already stopped drinking. The initial alcohol addiction research on Topamax is promising, but also controversial.
“Approaching A Prozac Moment”
The first study of Topamax on alcoholics was done in September of 2003 in England. They found that a side effect of the anti-convulsant seemed to curb alcoholics’ desires to drink. The initial results were so promising that another clinical trial was done outside of Chicago in 2007. One of the doctors who ran the trial said of the results, “We are approaching a Prozac moment.”
What the good doctor meant was that Prozac (fluoxetine), was a tremendous breakthrough in the treatment of major depression, which is a serious and mysterious mental disorder that affects millions (including this writer.) Being given a once a day pill that didn’t require your blood being monitored (such as with lithium) helped a phenomenal amount of people. Prozac is now one of, if not the, most prescribed drug in the world.
