I feel I am at a place in my life where I need to get some help, but wanted to come here first, to see if there was a catagory for discussions here?
General or mental health sounds like the right category, go ahead and post your questions.

I'm trying to find out some info about whether the Coast Guard will accept someone who has gone through alcohol/addictions treatment. If you are honest on your SF-86, it shouldn't be a problem as long as you finished the treatment and are discharged from the facility right? Thanks.
GREAT question!!
This is one that needs to be asked to a recruiter - but until then, I am sure there would be some sort of waiting period, like at least XX years between when the person was released from treatment until they could sign the paperwork to enlist.
Mom has always been addicted to alcohol. This addiction has put a strain on our relationship. I am torn between wanting to help and concern.
What should I do in this situation? I work in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts.
Any info you can give to help would be greatly appreciated.
I grew up with a mother who was an alcoholic. Although I was young, I still knew the only thing you can do is help. Sure, they'll completely deny it and it'll all blow up in your face. It's because telling your mother "You need rehab." is like telling you, "I'm going to take your car away." It is an addiction...meaning she cannot stop on her own. The only thing you can do is sit down with her and explain how you feel like your relationship is fucked up. Don't mention the alcohol until later in the conversation, though. Remember, first step of alcoholism is (1.We admitted that we were powerless over alcohol that our lives had become unmanagable.)
1st step...it's admitting.
i.e. alcohol addiction, oxy cotton, etc. Are you still clean now? Describe your experience. Any valid info would be much appreciated
I'm a recovering alcoholic. I took my last drink 9 years ago today.
I drank enormous amounts for about 25 years, so I expected to have terrible withdrawal symptoms when I quit. I "deserved" to have major DTs. However, I was lucky. My acute withdrawal (that is, the first few days) was relatively mild. I could not sleep, my heart raced, I sweated a lot, and I had some mild shaking . . . but no hallucinations or seizures. All in all, not that bad.
There is, however, a thing called post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS) and I had pretty bad PAWS for about 9 months. Sleeping trouble. Night sweats. Difficulties with muscle coordination and balance. Strong cravings for sugar. Extreme mood swings. Anxiety attacks. Everything subsided with time but I'm glad I had the AA meetings to go to so others could reassure me that I wasn't in for a lifetime of that; it was hard.
I'm still in AA, by the way. I never want to go back where I was, and I love to help the newcomers!
