what are three reasons that addiction to alcohol and drugs can effect your friends and family.?
Family

thanks so much
1. As your use increases you must hide it from friends and family.
2. Since you are spending more time getting loaded, and the folks might notice, you tend to avoid them. Old friends drop by the wayside as new using buddies take their place. This leads to isolating yourself from your family.
3. As the addiction progresses the addict will inevitably find it necessary to lie to family, and perhaps to steal from them to support an increasingly expensive habit.

I don't know where to turn. To shorten a very long story as best as I can my 24 year old brother is a severe alcoholic, he does nothing but drink and if he doesn't drink he has seizures. These seizures have racked up hospital bills that he will never be able to pay since he can never get a job because his problem is debilitating. I think he started drinking because he has an anxiety problem. He used to be a star baseball player and a "normal" person, but for the last five or so years has basically been ghost who has no real life and no future...it breaks my heart every time I see him. It's killing him and ruining my family. We do not have a lot of money, but I'm willing to find a way to get it if necessary and the only detox he has ever been to was literally in the ghetto and it was a terrible situation so we don't want him to go back there. I guess I just don't know what to do, does anyone know how to get him help or have ever been in a smilar situation who can help?
My family was in the same situation. It is very sad and heartbreaking!!!!!!!!! This person misses family functions, appointments.....life, basically. There really isn't much to be done in the end. Your brother has to want to help himself. Even if he does it's still hard for him. REALLY HARD. Detox will definitely help but it's only a temporary fix. I've heard of people going to detox time and time again!!! It may help him to go to a clean and sober living situation. It's a regular house with other people coping with alcoholism. There is one person who watches over them and they all have to attend meetings and check in to make sure they're clean. It does cost monthly but would be a really good support system for your brother. I talked to the head guy at a clean and sober place and he'd been to several detox facilities. He said what helped him is that his family and friends set up a faux funeral for him and everyone got up and said their farewells. His son told of how much he didn't want to be like his father. That really got to him. What you and your family can do for your own sanity is to join an Al-Anon meeting. Not AA. Al-Anon is for family of alcoholics. It really helps to cope with the situation. http://www.al-anon.alateen.org/english.html
If you need anymore info or just have a question do not hesitate to send an email. God bless!!! I pray that this will get better for you and your brother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My brother who i am extremely close to recently left to go to rehab and i need to talk to someone about it but my parents and me are not very close and my friends simply use me and don't really care so i cant tell them... what do i do?
im in highschool and i live in a very small town with no al anon or ala teen programs
If your town is small and you don't have the resources available in bigger cities, I would suggest trying this website. The writer is an ex addict and you can find support there. Understanding addiction will help you immensely when trying to cope with what your brother is going through.

to the hazards in our society. What is up with that?
But Angel, you didn't tell them why!
I have a cousin that's an alcoholic and drug user. I tell my kids, "See that man over there? Yeah, the drunken one staggering around. Stay away from him and never be like him. He's had boyfriends in prison and he's just nasty."
Would someone (knowledgable professional) please explain the effects of drug/alcohol addiction on the family? Please give as many examples as possible.
Individuals who are addicted are not the only people drugs tend to affect. The family is affected in a HUGE way.
+They can be enablers by giving the user money, supplies, etc
+They are drained emotionally, often feel helpless
+They are angry because the user chooses drugs over them
+They are often victims of abuse (outrage, etc from user)
+Users will steal from their family to sell things for drug money
+Families are torn between trying to help the user get sober without driving them completely out of their lives
+The cost of treatment can be very expensive, some families are not able to provide that
+Family member are working and contributing to society while the user's goal is getting high. This causes anger and resentment.
+Children tend to receive the worst affects simply because they need a positive role model in their lives and they are not mature enough to comprehend what addiction is, why the user chooses it over them, and children often blame themselves for the problems that are caused.

bFamily/b Week - bAlcohol/b Treatment - Drug Rehab Blog
This morning began another family program here at Cirque Lodge. Residents in our alcohol treatment or drug rehab program are encouraged to invite their family members to attend. Alcoholism and alcohol abuse are far more than a personal problem. Family members can also be affected by the actions and erratic behaviors caused drinking. Family members can also be looking for help and support in dealing with their loved one’s addiction. Family Week is a place where that is found.
The opening day of Family Week programming usually consist of two elements. First is an introductions meeting. This is a place where family members sit in a session with each other (minus their loved ones who are in treatment), and discuss why they are attending Family Week. Cirque Lodge counselors run this introductions workshop. Covered in this workshop are lessons on codependency and enabling. Many family members are unaware of how their own behavior is contributing to a codependent relationship or enabling their loved one to drink.
...A Parent#39;s Fear - Drug and bAlcohol Addiction/b | bFamily/b Mental Health
Intervention is not a show to start watching casually. The stories are always to compelling and surprising. The images and emotions usually stay with me for days. Last night I caught half of two shows, one about a woman huffing computer duster and another woman who was an alcoholic.
Once I hear the parents and other family members begin to talk about heir loved one, my first reaction is one of compassion and sorrow. My next is fear that one of my own children might end up addicted to something like the people on the show. How horrible must the family members feel watching their loved one slowly kill themselves with drugs? Granted, nearly everyone featured in these stories has some pretty difficult life situations. Usually there’s a divorce, death or abandonment, sometimes abuse, and often at least one other family member with a history of addiction.
The common thread seems to be an event or circumstance that causes a huge cavernous pain inside. The featured addict endured a great deal of stress and emotion, and often seemed to try other ways of distracting themselves before turning to drugs. One man got into porn before drugs, another girl was an overachiever making herself too busy with grades and activities, and another got married and had babies at an early age.
