My best friend is an alcoholic. I accompanied him to a alcohol rehab last Wednesday because I finally convinced him to get some help. The doctor and the counselor said that he has to undergo a detoxification first. What is detoxification? Is it really necessary? My best friend is asking me these questions and I don't know what to answer.
Yes, it is very important. See, detoxification is the removal of all that excess alcohol in the body. It really is the first step to recovery. Your friend has to clean his body and remove all of the filth that caused his alcoholism. A clean body complements a clear mind. Detoxification will help your friend become sober. my husband needs help with his drinking as well as other problems in his life. we dont know what kind of doctor to see
A psychologist would be more appropriate than a psychiatrist. They are more into treatment of the problem, working through goals, and posiibly connecting you with support groups, psychiatrists are more into prescribing drugs.

I am a pain patient and when refered to a pain doctor and he asked if i was still addicted to drugs and alchol. I felt raped. I have never had any specialist or therapist write that in my file, My family and friends can voach for me and when i was asked this by the pain doctor I felt extremely embarrased and dont want to go back until my family doctor issues an apolgy and corrects his letter
No. Any doctor who regularly prescribes pain medication to patients has a responsibility to himself and to the patient to ask pointed questions like this. Your doctor is under strict regulation by the FDA for his prescriptions. He is looking out for your welfare, and his own, by inquiring about your drug and alcohol history. If he did not ask you these questions, he would be negligent in his duties towards you as a patient.
If you really think that your doctor has no right to ask you about your drug and alcohol history then you are kidding yourself. Even if you feel your doctor was rude or accusing, well, that's simply too bad. If you feel that horribly embarrassed, then you should switch doctors.
I'm sorry you feel so "violated" by his asking you about your drug and alcohol addiction history that you liken it to rape. I hope you realize that you cheapen the feelings and emotions of women and men who have actually had that experience by saying your doctor "raped" you when he asked about your addiction history.
Grow up.
One of my long time friends recently got married and went in to rehab for pill, pot and alcohol addiction -- this is after he started having seizures due to diet pills that he wouldn't tell his Doctors or anyone else he was taking.
He avoided me (I drink beer and would be a horrible influence on him) for almost a year and I assumed he made other friends in AA and rehab. No problem there.
A week ago I got an email inviting me to his birthday party that he is throwing for himself. He stated specifically "I will be opening presents, hint, hint." He has always been narcistic, but I thought it was pretty funny that he's almost 40, throwing a party for himself, and doesn't want anything to do with me unless I bring him a gift.
I didn't go, but my brother went to eat for free. A total of five people showed up (one being his wife and two others were his parents) for his "party" -- brunch and miniature golf.
He kept referring to my brother as "the resident alcoholic" whenever Champagne would be offered. Apparently, he is even more self centered, arrogant and condecending than he ever was.
Do you think that the years and years of drug and alcohol abuse have caused irreversible retardation to my friend's brain?
I think he could have suffered some brain damage somewhere in the mix. But it is also likely he could be jealous of those who can drink alcohol without fear of relapse(which could explain his comment about your brother and his avoidance of you). As for the self-centered behavior? There's no excuse for it, and you were right not to go to his "party". In all likelihood, he was self-centered even before the drinking and drugging days- and the intoxicants made matters worse.
