I have had alcohol. I even got drunk when I was a teen from peer pressure. But now as an adult, I rarely drink.....no desire to. I have also used narcotic pain killers after surgery and never had the desire to continue using them once the pain was gone which was usually within a week. It must be something in my genes. I know so many people addicted to drugs and alcohol. I think if we could find the addiction genes, we could wipe out addiction. What do you think?
I guess addiction esp. with alcohol and drugs in not genetic it's a matter of choice. However, rehab center can help people who's with such addiction.

the client/addict is 65 years of age and sqaundered $500,000 of his pension and now owes the IRS 170,000. He has services thru HASA which I have now requested Adult Protection Services to conduct an assessment to continue his social services. There has been financial exploitation by his attorney/lover. I would like to have a rehab option in place..He is unwilling to voluntarily be admitted into rehab
Unfortunately, if he isn't willing to go to rehab, there isn't anything you can do unless the courts and/or ADS legally order him into treatment.

From what I've read, psychologists are better off getting at least a Masters degree, and many, including my own psychologist who I just stopped seeing, earned their PhD. The Addictions Counselor probably needs a bachelors or a Masters tops to find work in a hospital or another center. The required degrees are basically the same though. I want to become a Drug and Alcohol Addictions Counselor because it would be more fulfilling to save lives that to listen to everyone's sob stories, which is usually helpful to them, but just not as fulfilling for me. However, I typed in "Adult Psychologist" in New York and it says they earn 108,000...and Drug and Addictions Counselors, who seem like they should be in higher demand, only earn 51,000. What is up?
Yes, psychologists (Ph.D.) earn more. Drug and Addictions Counselors may come out of various programs, pure counseling (outside of psychology). You can also hold a position like this with a master's in psychology. If this is what interests you do it. You can read about careers in psychology at apa.org There is also info on salary for all types of psychologists. Salary also varies depending upon who you work for. Government agency, independent, hospital, etc. (psychologist/professor)

Addiction is endemic in American families. A USA TODAY/HBO nationwide poll of adults April 27-May 31 found that one in five said they had an immediate relative who at some point had been addicted to alcohol or drugs. That translates into roughly 40 million American adults with a spouse, parent, sibling or child battling addiction. And that doesn't count the millions of children living with an addicted parent.
Many Americans might find these numbers shocking. But H. Westley Clark, who directs the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, or SAMHSA, says he's not surprised that 20% of poll respondents said they have an immediate relative who has been addicted to alcohol or drugs.
Is it this bad and do the results/figures honestly underscore the problem of addiction ?
Were you/are you affected in some way by a spouse or close relative, by alcohol/drug addiction ?
Yes my family has been seperated for 6 months now because of alcohol and the things that come with it. lying, cheating, spending outrageous amounts of money.. Not going to work. staying ouy late.. all due to an addiction that wasnt his wife and children. Now hes recovering trying to make it right.. I DONT KNOW HOW TO REGAIN WHAT WE HAD. WE HAVE 19 YEARS TOGETHER AND I REALLY DONT WANNA LET IT ALL GO FOR GOOD..
Friends of mine have an adult child who has already been through short term drug and alcohol rehab (2 weeks to 30 days) treatments, only to relapse. He needs longer term treatment to address the psychological problems associated with addiction; but like millions of other Americans he has no insurance.
Is anyone aware of any long term treatment centers that may help him?
Having just had a loved one go through this I know it can be incredibly tough. I do know that there are programs in Southern California that are long term - I believe that one is called Sobriety House in Orange County - that are truly not for profit and really do have long term - a year or so - and are very strict. You have to take the MMPI (Minnasota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) and go through significant testing first, but it is free. The other thing is that - and this is really sad - court ordered drug treatment is usually done at no cost. If this person hits bottom and ends up in the system they may be in a better position to get help. The family can't save him if he won't help himself. I would also call the county to ask about resources. Good luck, I know that it can be incredibly tough.

Addiction makes a person more vulnerable to health problems in two main ways: It weakens the body’s cellular defenses against illness, and it increases the likelihood that an individual will engage in high risk activities. High risk activities such as needle sharing or engaging in unsafe sex can increase an individual’s chances of exposure to serious diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis. High risk behaviors such as driving while intoxicated can increase the chance that an individual will experience bodily injury. Statistics from Canada’s Alberta Health and Wellness (the government of Alberta’s health system) gathered in 2004 show that injection drug use was the primary risk factor in 19 percent of new HIV cases in that year, in 45 percent of new HIV cases in 1998, and 10 percent in 1991. In addition, international studies indicate that between 50 and 90 percent of intravenous drug users are infected with Hepatitis C (HCV). Recent studies continue to indicate high rates of HIV, hepatitis,...
