I heard some kids in school talking about a holistic approach in relation to drug and alcohol addiction. Does anybody know more about it? I'm just interested.

I think it's a special program given to people who are suffering from alcoholism and drug addiction. They provide treatment and services to help the patient recover faster. There's a website about the Holistic Approach. I added the link below. It's really informative.

How long does alcohol addiction last?
Cigar on Drink

I've had alcohol problem and i quit drinking months ago, but i'm still getting cravings. I thought once you go cold turkey these feelings would stop after a matter of weeks! How long does it usually take for an addiction to go before you can start drinking again?

You can't. An addiction like this is something you can learn to control, but never get rid of. If you ever drink again, it is most likely that you will succumb to your addiction again and end up where you were all those months ago. You may feel those cravings on and off for the rest of your life.

When you do a program like Alcoholics Anonymous, they explain all of this to you. Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic, whether you ever touch the booze again or not. Your choice is between being a non-drinking alcoholic or not. Unfortunately, you can't just wait for the addiction to pass, like a cold, and then go back to your old ways and not expect to still be addicted.

I'd advise you to get help, if you're having trouble staying sober.

Does my friend need alcohol addiction treatment?
whiskey with ice

I have a friend who stopped drinking alcohol two days ago and she has been experiencing what seems to me like withdrawal symptoms. She's always craving alcohol and gets clammy hands. I told her these are signs that she should get herself treated for addiction but she won't listen to me. Am I right? If so, what can I do?

Your friend does have mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms. (other signs would be restlessness, insomnia, dreams of alcohol, hallucinations...) These are indeed signs that she should get herself treated for her alcohol addiction. The best thing you can do is to get her checked up by a doctor and he will then assess your friend's condition. Your friend needs to be treated for her withdrawal. If she's not swayed by your pleas, you can do an alcohol intervention for her.

  • Addiction Medications Interview

I was recently invited to be interviewed about the rise of pharmaceuticals in the addiction treatment industry, and the trend to create and use more and more medications to combat drug and alcohol addiction. There are also vaccines that could potentially prevent addiction to certain substances that are already undergoing testing in some cases.

First of all let me clarify that there is not necessarily a huge demand that we are seeing from the client side of things. The real trend that I have noticed is in research and pharmaceutical companies that are trying to “cash in” on this type of problem. That is of course what drug companies do and I don’t think we should necessarily fault them for it.

In other words, addicts are not necessarily the ones who are clamoring for the easy fix in all cases. If anything, I notice some doctors who are encouraged by new drugs that can potentially combat cravings, much more so than the treatment facilities and drug rehabs.
